INV ONLY Even heroes need a vacation

Post by Fort/Sam on July 20th 2017, 11:38 am

The departure hall bubbled with life. People trudges though the hall, their luggage in tow as they looked for a place to sit. Others had to run from one end to the other when they heard their flight was due to depart somewhere else. Some were checking the many time tables as they tried to figure out where they had to go next, often with their tickets at hand. While their mother was busy checking their flight information, a bored group of children had taken their football out. They would have started a game right there, had their father not timely intervened. With a sad expression on their faces the children put their football back where it came from.

On the speakers a voice announced that travellers Tokyo could now board their plane. The speaker also reminded a mister John Smith he had to hurry to gate eight as his flight was about to depart. Though with all the noise the travellers made, you’d have to have a sharp hearing to pick it all up. Two dogs, each locked up in a portable cage, had decided this place was still too quiet and started a barking contest. Much to the dismay of their owners who desperately tried to calm their pets.

Amidst all the chaos, a photographer was busy taking wedding pictures. The bride was still wearing her white gown. Apparently, they were going from church straight on their honeymoon. Not an uncommon practice, though most of the time the bride changed into something more practical before arriving at the airport. The broom was still wearing his tuxedo too, but at least he didn’t have to worry about a train getting in everyone’s way.

A bit aloof from this all, Sam sat on a small, uncomfortable chair. Next to her sat Anna, absorbed by a crossword puzzle she had been trying to solve ever since they arrived here. Not an easy feature with all the distractions around her. Arielle was her too, somewhere. As soon as they had found a place to sit, Arielle had disappeared into one of the many duty-free shops this place had to offer. Sam could only hope she wouldn’t stay away too long. Jeannie could be here any moment now, and Arielle had the tickets.

yay vacation time Jeannie was super excited, she had got a call from Sammie to meet her at the airport, in typical Jeannie, she made a comical dramatic entrance.

as the on lookers were treated to the spectacle of a petite blonde trying to carry a tower of suitcases and inflatable pool toys bigger than she was.

she manages to get to where Sammie was and the pile of stuff plopped down in front of Sam, Jeannie wearing a hula outfit popped out from behind it with a big smile on her face

who's ready for a lauhala Jeannie starts hula dancing

Sam startled when a pile of suitcases was suddenly dropped in front of her, and Jeannie jumped from behind them like a Jack-in-the-box. And as if Jeannie carrying a ridiculous amount of luggage for only a few days wasn’t enough, the girl was already dressed as a skimpy hula outfit too. Sam wasn’t certain what to do first, politely great the girl or ask her where on earth she managed to find a taxi driver willing to take a passenger dressed like that – not to mention all her luggage- to the airport. When Jeannie decided now was the right time to show off her dancing skills, and attracting even more attention, Sam decided to go with the first.

“Hello, how are you doing?” she asked. Of all the things she could say, it was probably the worst line to start the conversation.

A bit helplessly, she turned to Anna. The redhead was still working on her crossword. Or at least pretending to. She was peeking over the top of her magazine, and while her pencil still moved, it never touched the page.

Sam could only open and close her moth much like a goldfish when Jeannie handed her a bottle of super cleaner. While it would certainly come in handy to clean her costume, she had been forced to wear the spare one since that fateful day, she hadn’t expected to get a bottle of super detergent at an airport. What was she supposed to do with it here? She didn’t have her dirty clothes with her. Doing the wash wasn’t one of the activities she was palling to do while on vacation. And how was she going to get this past the security check? Those people wouldn’t even let her pass with a bottle of water!

From the corner of her eye, Sam could see Anna’s eyes sparkling as she peeked over her magazine. While she smiled faintly, she did not say a word.

“Thanks,” Sam finally managed to say without taking her eyes of the bottle. Only when Jeannie asked her about her outfit, did Sam manage to turn her attention away from the bottle. Jeannie’s outfit… Sam found it was difficult to say abutting about it. There wasn’t much to say anything about in the first place. Arielle would approve, though, Sam was certain of it. But if she told Jeannie so, the girl would probably stay that way for the duration of their vacation.

“Isn’t it a bit cold?” Sam eventually asked when Jeannie displayed a new dance.

From behind the magazine, Anna started to giggle. Which did little to improve the situation.

Sam was relieved to see Jeannie put on a jacket, it made people less inclined to stare their way. Perhaps the jacket was not the best match to go with a skirt made out of palm leaves, real of imitation. She didn’t say anything about it because she didn’t want to come across as a moaner.

“I’m Anna,” Anna introduced herself when Jeannie peeked over the magazine. “And you must be Jeannie, I recognize you from the picture. Nice to meet you.”

“Don’t mention the picture,” Sam hissed. She already had an uncomfortable fifteen minutes when she had to explain to her mother what that was about. And another thirty minutes during which her mother tried to talk her out of operating as Fort any longer. Again. With about the same results as any other time the topic was brought up: voices were raised and in the end Sam just ran away when she couldn’t cope with it any-more.

At school and at the hospital she had merely been the subject of a few bad jokes. And a few insinuations this was the reason why she had called sick the next day. The only one we didn’t have any comments about it, was Dirk. And true to his word, he had made sure nothing about the events from the bunker got out. It probably was for the best if the people never knew some lunatic with an army of killer robots had taken up residence in the countryside.

“You’ve been gossiping about me, haven’t you,” Anna laughed as she gave Sam a playful punch on the shoulder. “Admit it, you have. I can see it in your eyes!” Sam just smiled back in response. “Anyway,” Anna continued. “Yeah, I’m coming along too. Something about it being cheaper that way?” She gave Sam a questioning look.

Sam shrugged her shoulders. She recalled Arielle mentioning something about it being cheaper if she booked for four persons, but that was all Arielle had told her. She hadn’t been there when Arielle had arranged everything, so she only had Arielle’s word to go by. “Something like that, yes,” Sam replied.

“The one with you and Sam on it,” Anna replied. “It was very popular when it was first posted.” Sam gave a snort of disapproving as she wondered why people just couldn’t let that picture rest. All she managed was provoking some laughter from Anna. “And I’ve got to admit, you’re way cuter now that I see you in person and front views.” Now it was Sam’s turn to give Anna a teasing punch.

“She’s already got them, the tickets I mean,” Anna replied. “At least I hope she does. She just told me I didn’t need to worry about a thing. I guess that included tickets too. I sure don’t want to get stuck here.”

“She’s got the tickets,” Sam reassured everyone. What she didn’t tell was that Arielle only printed them out yesterday evening because she had forgotten about them and nearly left them on the table in the living room when they left home this morning. But there was no need for them to know, Sam reasoned. Arielle had already been kind enough to treat them all on a free vacation so she deserved to have this overlooked.

When Jeannie eagerly mentioned people had written stories based on that picture, Sam froze. They couldn’t have! What sort of a twisted mind would start writing stories based on a picture ripped out of context? Didn’t they have anything better to do? There was absolutely no need to start spreading fictional stories about her! Or anyone else, for that matter. They could at least write down their own experiences if they desperately believed the world had any need for stories like that. Or make something up if their own lives were such uneventful! Anything was fine, as long as she didn’t have to play any part in it!

“Doesn’t look like she’s trilled about that,” Anna dryly remarked.

“People fantasising about me like that isn’t the kind of attention I’m hoping for,” Sam replied while she desperately prayed someone would change the subject soon. Didn’t matter what it was, as long as it didn’t involve someone else’s fantasies about her. Or anyone else she knew, for that matter.

She didn’t exactly get what she asked for when Jeannie all of a sudden reminisced about the time they spent as Arielle’s ‘students’. ‘I take it back, this is worse,’ went through her mind when Jeannie started telling Anna about that time. What was Anna going to think about her?

Frightened she glanced at Anna who had listened carefully and nodded when Jeannie finished.

“I’m not surprised Arielle picked a position of power. She’d always been a dominating person, that one,” Anna started. “She actually pulls that stunt each time she meets someone. Not really my thing.” She than looked at Sam. “But you, Sam,” she started, sending a shiver down Sam’s spine. “I never knew you enjoyed the submissive role. I’m not judging you, of course. It’s just unexpected, that’s all.” Her tone was as neutral as could be, but it didn’t disguise the sparks of joy in her eyes. Moments later she busted out in laughter. “Sorry, I couldn’t help it,” she reassured a frightened Sam when she had come to her senses. “The opportunity was too good to pass.”

“Not funny,” Sam mumbled. Though she couldn’t help be secretly relieved Anna wasn’t thinking the worst of her.

“Talking about our gracious hostess, shouldn’t we go looking for her?” Anna suggested when she had wiped the last tear from her face. “We’ll be allowed to board soon and she’s got the tickets. I don’t want to miss the flight because she’s shopping or something.”

She couldn’t refuse Jeannie when she gave her those puppy eyes. But really, carrying all those suitcases around when they went to look for Arielle. The weight wasn’t an issue, but it was still unpractical to walk around with a pile of luggage. Not to mention the amount of attention it would attract if she did so. It wouldn’t be a quiet vacation any-more if she started displaying feats of super strength.

“Do you mind staying here and keeping an eye on Jeannie’s belongings?” she asked Anna as an alternative.

“Sure, no problem. Still need to finish this anyway,” Anna replied as she waved with her magazine.

“Thanks. Should Arielle come back while we’re away, make sure she doesn’t wander off looking for us. We’ll be back in –“ She quickly checked her watch to see how much time they had left. “Twenty minutes or so.”

“Have fun,” Anna nodded before she focused her attention back on her crossword.

“Alright,” Sam addressed Jeannie. “Which way to go?”
