“What about the only stories you know aren’t the ones that will help you sleep?” Sam casually asked.

“We can sleep when we’re back home,” Arielle shrugged. “Besides, why are you worried about that? You don’t even need to sleep. Anyway, are you gonna stop here for tonight or not?”

“I’ll continue for a few more minutes if you promise to behave,” Sam answered. Arielle’s reaction, scratching in the back of her neck and looking away, wasn’t very promising. Sam went on regardless. “The king waved again and all held their tongue. He pointed at the handsome fellow and instructed him to tell what had happened.” Arielle whispered a soft “yes” when Sam paused. “The youth stepped forwards, unsure how to properly address a king, but he started his story anyway. He told the king how, at dawn, most of the village had gathered around the village square in preparation of the upcoming Harvest Festival when suddenly a dark shadow covered the entire square. The next moment a thundering roar made everyone look up un terror. Before they had time to react, fire came down from the sky. The villagers ran every possible way in an attempt to escape a scorching death. The youth explained he looked up and saw a gigantic flying creature.” Sam pauses to build up tension.

“So it’s a dragon,” Arielle said, ruining the moment.

Sam sighted. “Yes, It’s a dragon. White Whip stepped forwards and spoke: I’ll slay the creature, father, don’t you worry!”

“And that’s where I’m taking over tomorrow evening,” Arielle stated.

“But I haven’t made her do anything yet,”
Sam complained. She wasn’t going to give up her heroine like that. Especially not to let Arielle do with her as she pleased.

“Don’t worry, I’ll make her do many exciting things,” Arielle failed to reassure her. “You were only going to let her do boring, goodly things anyway. I’ll make her do what’s really needed to stop that dragon. And now off to bed. Chu, chu!” She waved with her hands to drive Sam of the bed.

“You don’t have a clue which way the story’s going to, don’t you?” Sam asked when she was certain Jeannie had drifted away. “Or do you really have a grand plan already?” She hoped not, Arielle’s grand plans were not always appreciated by everyone.

Arielle shrugged. “As long as we’re having fun.” She looked at the sleeping Jeannie for a moment. “She for one was certainly having fun. I bet if I hadn’t stopped you she’d have you telling stories till dawn. You’d be fine, a sore troth maybe, but she’d be too tired to do anything. Besides, I can’t have a model with bags under her eyes.”

“You’re really planning to go through with that?
” Sam inquired. She remembered Arielle’s idea about making several drawings featuring Jeannie as the Island Princess and herself as the evil pirate all too well. And unfortunately for Arielle she had ‘accidentally’ forgotten her pirate costume at home.

“We’ll see. I’ve got my paper and pencils with me just in case. If we can find the right spot for it. And if not, I’m sure there’s plenty to do around here.” She yawned and put her hand in front of her mouth. “But right now, I’m going to bed. It’s been a long day.” She disappeared under the blankets, moving as close to Jeannie as possible.

“What’s the point of claiming the biggest bed if you’re doing that,” Sam asked herself out loud. If she’d know before, she would have made them use the smaller bed.

With everyone else in bed and asleep, there wasn’t much reason for her to stay up either. She climbed into her own bed and turned off the lights. All seemed so peaceful now. It was hard to believe four girls where sharing the same room right now. Hopefully the other evenings would be as quiet as this one.

She pulled the blanked over her and rolled to the middle of the bed until she was lying next to Anna. It was quiet enough to hear her breath. Carefully not to wake her, Sam moved her arm underneath the blanked until it was wrapped around Anna. She pulled her a bit closer until the girl’s head was resting against her chest. It had been far too long since they’d slept like this without a single worry. She closes her eyes and prayed this vacation would never end.
