INV ONLY Encounter in the museum

Post by Fort/Sam on December 12th 2017, 2:47 pm

Matilda stopped her motorcycle right in front of the British Museum. She opened the visor of her helmet and spotted the first raindrops splashing on the silver-grey handlebar. It seemed she had arrived here just in time. The hasty ride from Edinburgh to London had been uncomfortable enough in this chill winter weather. Had Benjamin not told her it was urgent she got her as fast as possible, she'd have taken the Bentley instead.
It started to rain harder now. Matilda left her motorcycle where it stood and hurried up the stairs where she was greeted by an overly diligent guard.

"Miss, you can't park her," he started to lecture her as if she was some disobedient child.

She took her helmet off and studied the guard for a moment. He was young, early twenties at most ad had short blond hair, a strong chin and muscles you didn't get from standing next to a door all day long. The badge pinned to his chest identified him as Tom Parker. A name that didn't ring a bell and she knew all of the staff. She concluded he must be a new one who didn't know of her privileges yet. Like leaving her motorcycle in front of the entrance or staying way past opening hours.

"Lady Stark," a familiar voice called her name. Matilda looked up and noticed her second guard with greyish hair coming their way. She recognized him right away; it was David Doyle, the senior guard. They want back a long time; nearly fifteen, years give or take. She had told him several times already, there was no reason for formalities; he could just call her Matilda, but he always insisted on addressing her as Lady Stark.

"What brings you here this early?" he asked her. "And on such a lousy day no less? Come to have seen our new exhibition, have you?"

"Hello, David," she greeted him back. "And no, I haven't. I'm here for Benjamin. Do you know if he's available?"

"Boss, she left her bike-"Parker protested when he noticed his authority was being disrespected.

"Lady Stark can do that," David hissed between his teeth, urging Parker to go away. "Sorry about that," David apologised when Parker had left inside. "He's new. Good boy, but a bit too obsessed with the rules. But I'll make a proper museum guard if him yet, you'll see."

Matilda nodded. If anyone could teach someone how to bend the rules a little, it was David.

They both walked inside, to the iconic mail hall with its double staircases leading to the next floor. Once inside, the first thing Matilda did was unzipping her black leather jacket, revealing a white shirt underneath.

"I saw Mister Lloyd going to a meeting about half an hour ago," David told her when the where inside. "I'll let him know you're in right away."

If Benjamin had gone to a meeting, it might take a while before he had time to see her. As she waited for David to return with any news, it occurred to Matilda she had left home without having eaten much. Figuring she'd have the time, she went to the small cafeteria at the end of the main hall in the hope of getting a coffee and a sandwich before David was back.

INV ONLY Re: Encounter in the museum

Post by Fort/Sam on December 13th 2017, 2:48 pm

Angrily Tom Parker marched through the corridors. How on earth could David let something like that pass? That woman had clearly violated several safety rules and regulations. For starters, she wasn't even allowed to be there with her bike in the first place! Let alone leave it there right in front of the entrance! The visitor parking places where in the back! David just let her do it because she apparently had some sort of fancy title. An outrage! Every visitor had to be treated equally, regardless of social standing. Wrongdoers had to be punished.

Talking about wrongdoers, what was that blond girl doing? She seemed to be showing an awful lot of interest in the T-Rex model they had on display. He moved in closer and overheard her mentioning the urge to touch the model. To touch it, just the thought alone made him unwell. Kids these days didn't have any respect any more.

"Miss, what are you doing?" he asked the blond girl.

***

Matilda had managed to get her hands on a cup of hot coffee and a martini. Armed with these two and with her helmed under her arm she looked for an empty seat from where she'd be clearly visible in case David came back before she'd finished eating.

Finding one proved simple enough; this early the museum was mostly empty. She put her helmet on an empty chair next to her, hung her jacket on the back of her own chair and set down. She took a nip from her coffee and nearly spit it out again. It was too hot to drink! She pushed the cup aside and continued with her sandwich.

INV ONLY Re: Encounter in the museum

Post by Fort/Sam on December 14th 2017, 2:33 pm

Pet the dinosaur. The worlds slowly formed inside Tom's mind. She wanted to pet the dinosaur. She wanted to pet the dinosaur. This was too much for his mind to fathom. What did she think this place was? One giant amusement park? Well she wasn't going to get away with this transgression, not on his watch.

"Miss, this is a priceless exhibition piece, you cannot touch it as if it were a pet!" be bellowed.

***

Matilda looked up from her sandwich. There was a lot of noise in the museum today. Much more than she was accustomed to. It was never quiet here, not while the museum was open anyway. The echoing of footsteps on the floor, or the quiet chatting of the many visitors was as much part of the museum as any of the historical artefacts this place housed. But outright shouting, no, that was out of place.

Against better judgement, she put her sandwich down and stood up. A quick look couldn't do much harm. She'd be back before David returned with any news. Maybe she could do something about the shouting too, so she could enjoy the rest of her meal in silence. And the of the visitors their visit.

Finding the source of the commotion didn't take her very long. It was caused by the guard she had met earlier who was shouting against a blond girl standing at the foot of a large lifelike dinosaur replica that felt a bit out of place, everything else her was historical, the dinosaur was prehistorically.

"What's going on here?" she inquired.

Pet the dinosaur? It took Matilda a moment to realise this girl was talking about the replica. She couldn’t think of any reason why anyone wanted to do that, with its black and brown scales and giant teeth the replica was hardly what one could describe as cuddly.

She could think plenty of other reasons why someone would like to touch the various items on display here. Holding an item that was brimming with history in your hands was like actually being part of said history. This was, according to her anyway, how a museum visit should be, not just looking at them from behind glass.

“Yeah, I get what you mean,” she told the girl.

“I’m nor surprised you’re taking her side,” Parker snapped at her. “You may not think much of them, but there are rules around here. And one of the clearly states that it is prohibited for visitors to touch any of the items in display here.”

Yes, rules had a tendency to make things harder. Often without a real reason. Here or course there was the added complication that some of the items here were a few thousand years old and as a result in a poor condition. Having them touched on a daily basis, even if you taught the people how to handle them, would cause them to break soon and be lost forever. This argument at least explained why the older items could not be touched, but not the dinosaur replica. It didn’t look particularly fragile and should be able to handle the daily touching by visitors.

“Come now, Tom, it won’t hurt to let her touch the model for just a second, won’t it?” an amiable voice from behind Matilda asked. “Shouldn’t we encourage such enthusiast from our visitors?”

Matilda turned around. A few feet behind a stood an elderly man wearing a black three-piece suit. He had a round face with only a few grey hairs on it. He looked at Tom with his soft blue eyes.

“Hello, Benjamin,” Matilda greeted her old friend.

Matilda smirked when this girl, named Jeannie apparently – referred to Benjamin as grandpa. She knew they couldn’t be related though, Benjamin didn’t have children. Let alone grandchildren this girl’s age. Benjamin from his part didn’t seem to mind. In fact, he was beaming. If he had just gotten back from a meeting, it wasn’t surprising he needed something to relax a bit. She knew from personal experience how boring some meetings could be.

“Director Lloyd, you can’t be serious about this,” Tom objected.

“Oh, but I am,” Benjamin answered.

“I’ll lend her a hand,” Matilda spoke before walked towards this Jeannie girl. She couldn’t expect Benjamin to lift her, his age wouldn’t allow it. And Tom didn’t seem likely to help. Sure, Benjamin could order him to do it if he really wanted to. But she knew Benjamin wouldn’t, it would be abuse of power. And right he was for not doing it.

“Here you go," she said after she had put her arms around this girl and before lifting her from the ground. It reminded her of taking her children for an outing. Adam and she had to constantly lift them too in order for them to see things a bit better. They didn’t weight nearly as much as this girl did, though.

Once Jeannie had petted the dinosaur, Matilda put her down again and let go.

“It was nice meeting you,” she told Jeannie before she walked back to Benjamin. “I’ve got here as fast as I could. Now, what was so important I needed to come all the way from Edinburgh in such a hurry?”

“I can see that, you didn’t even put a jacket on,” Benjamin joked.

A jacket? What was he talking about? Of course had’ put one on before leaving. It was too cold to be out without one anyway. Then she remembered she had left her jacket and helmet over at the canteen when she came to check what the commotion was about. Along with her coffee and a half-eaten sandwich.

“It’s over at the canteen,” she told him. “You can tell we what it’s all about while I finish my coffee.”

“It’s not the thing I’d like to discuss in public,” Benjamin told her secretively. “You see, the wreckage of El Unicornio has recently been discovered.”

Matilda froze. Could it really be? After all those centuries had it finally ben discovered? The actual wreckage of the El Unicornio? The thought she might finally be able to see it for herself was like a childhood dream coming true. But at the same time it scare her too; she kenw all too well in which stories the ship and its captain were named. If it had really been discovered and the stories turned out to be true. Who knew how they could change the world.

Startled Matilda looked up. She hadn’t expected this girl to follow them, let alone eavesdrop on their conversation. And now she was trumpeting around what she had heard. Fortunately for them she didn’t understand what the conversation was about and had completely misinterpreted the words.

It didn’t stop various other visitors looking their way. Most were just annoyed their peaceful visit to the museum was disturbed like this. Their angry gazes spoke book parts. Still, anyone of them had heard them name. They might not know what it means, but if just one of them started investigating the name or casually dropped it somewhere they all could be in a lot of trouble. Tom looked their way too, his arms crossed giving them the I-told-you-so-expression.

This situation had to be handled as soon as possible. She looked at Benjamin who gave her a short nod before he stepped towards the noisy girl.

“Girl, why don’t you come with me to my office?” he kindly suggested. “You’re disturbing the other visitors right now. If you really want something to eat, I can have a piece of apple-pie brought up. And some hot chocolate milk too, if you want.”

Matilda frowned. Was Benjamin really expecting she’d fall for this? Sure, she behaved like a little child, but bribing her with sweets to keep her quiet? He must really be desperate if he thought that would work.
