INV ONLY Re: Encounter in the museum

Post by Fort/Sam on December 20th 2017, 6:21 am

Startled Matilda looked up. She hadn’t expected this girl to follow them, let alone eavesdrop on their conversation. And now she was trumpeting around what she had heard. Fortunately for them she didn’t understand what the conversation was about and had completely misinterpreted the words.

It didn’t stop various other visitors looking their way. Most were just annoyed their peaceful visit to the museum was disturbed like this. Their angry gazes spoke book parts. Still, anyone of them had heard them name. They might not know what it means, but if just one of them started investigating the name or casually dropped it somewhere they all could be in a lot of trouble. Tom looked their way too, his arms crossed giving them the I-told-you-so-expression.

This situation had to be handled as soon as possible. She looked at Benjamin who gave her a short nod before he stepped towards the noisy girl.

“Girl, why don’t you come with me to my office?” he kindly suggested. “You’re disturbing the other visitors right now. If you really want something to eat, I can have a piece of apple-pie brought up. And some hot chocolate milk too, if you want.”

Matilda frowned. Was Benjamin really expecting she’d fall for this? Sure, she behaved like a little child, but bribing her with sweets to keep her quiet? He must really be desperate if he thought that would work.

Matilda blinked in disbelief. She hadn’t expected it to work. Not in a long shot. It didn’t even work with her own kids. And they were only seven years old. According to Adam it was because they took too much after her, but that was beside the point.

She stayed motionless there for a moment while Benjamin walked the girl to his office before she got a move on again. She rushed back to the canteen where her belongings where still waiting for her. Quickly she put her jacket back on, grabbed her helmet and sandwich. The coffee was too much for her to take it with her. Benjamin would just have to offer her a drink.

“Here, you can have this,” she said while she put the still hot cup on a nearby table. The younger couple at the table just stared at her, unsure what to say. “It’s okay, I didn’t do anything with it,” she reassured them before she ran off again.

The other people inside the elevator didn’t ask what she was doing when she jumped into an elevator that was strictly reserved for employees. They both knew her and knew she could go wherever she wanted too. One of them did give her a fowl look, because of her wild entrance and because she was eating while their hung a clear sign it was not allowed to bring food inside the elevator.

“You want a bite too?” She offered the sandwich, which earned her a grumble from one, and a smile from the other.

Matilda shrugged and took another bite from her sandwich. She continued eating when the elevator stopped and she walked through the corridors. By the time she had reached Benjamin’s office, she had finished eating. She turned her hand to a fist and gave the thick wooden door a bang before walking in without waiting for an answer.

Benjamin looked up from behind his desk when she entered. He waved her to come over when he noticed her. In front of his desk stood two chairs. Once was occupied by Jeannie who had gotten her promised sweets. Matilda sank down in the second. Her helmet disappeared under it.

“Right,” Benjamin started, “Miss, Jeannie was it, are you parents her too?”

Benjamin nodded. “I will let my people look for them,” he said. “In the meanwhile, how was your visit to the museum so far?”

Matilda understood what Benjamin was planning now. He was counting on the help of this girl her parents to make sure she wouldn’t say anything about El Unicornio until the time was right. She doubted if it was going to be that simple. This girl had already run from her parents just to pet a big doll. It wasn’t guaranteed she’d be quiet just because her parents would tell her. Not that they had much of an alternative. Perhaps if Benjamin allowed her to pet the dinosaur every day now she’d be quiet. At least long enough for her to sort this matter out.

‘If this is the vocabulary our youth had mastered, the future of this country is looking beak,’ Matilda told herself. Benjamin on the other hand grinned when the girl asked if he was the king of this place and suggested that he allowed the touching of the dinosaur models from now on. When she mentioned something about the grumpy guard, Matilda felt a bit responsible. If she hadn’t given this Tom Parker a hard time when she had arrived, he might not have reacted at his girl the way he did.

“I am the curator of this museum,” Benjamin explained.

“He’s in charge of the collection,” Matilda explained just in case this girl didn’t know what that meant.

“And while I’m not in charge of the rules,” Benjamin continued as if he hadn’t been interrupted, “I do have some influence in the board of directors. And I know all the guards in person. If I, were to say, allow you to touch the dinosaurs, they wouldn’t make a fuss over it.”

Matilda frowned. Benjamin sure was going far to keep this girl pleased. No one would mind if she touched the replica’s. While expensive, any damage to them wasn’t the end of the world. They could all be fixed if needed. But what if this girl would want to “touch” the priceless artefacts the museum owned too? Benjamin allowed her to do so, provided she waited until after closing hours, but she knew how to handle the items in here. She doubted the girl would be as careful as she was. Imagine she’d take the sword of William the Conqueror and started playing with it as if it were a toy. Granted, her children had tried the same once, but they had only been six back then.

Her pondering were disturbed when someone knocked the door. The head of Miss Smith, Benjamin’s secretary, appeared in the opening when Benjamin had allowed her to enter.

“Mister Lloyd, if have the girl’s parents here,” she stated.

“Splendid, Betty. Please let them in,” Benjamin instructed her.

Matilda got up and offered her seat to Jeannie’s mother. She didn’t mind standing and it saved them time looking for additional chairs. Jeannie’s father would have to stand too, unless his daughter was willing to give him her chair.

“Now that we’re all gathered, I’m afraid I’ve got some unpleasant news for the both of you,” Benjamin started. “But where are my manners. I’m Benjamin Lloyd, the curator of this museum. And this,” he continued, making a small hand gesture to Matilda,” is Lady Matilda Stark. She’s, how shall I say it, responsible for finding many of the unique artefacts we have on display here.”

Matilda noticed he left his own title out, but made sure to mention hers. He even explicitly emphasized it. Why she couldn’t say. It’s not as if its was carrying any weight here. He might as well have said she was charwoman of the local stamp collection association.

“Nice to meet you,” Matilda nodded.

“Now that we’ve properly been introduced, we can come to business,” Benjamin spoke again. “The thing is, your daughter has accidentally overheard an important conversation. And we would very much like to ask for your aid to ensure your daughter keeps this information to herself. At the very least for the time being. Once the word can be safely let out, we will, of course, let you know.”

Safely let out. Matilda doubted that day would come anytime soon. She wasn’t even sure if she’d life the day to see this information being ‘safely let out’ as Benjamin put it. If she’d live to see the day. She smiled briefly. It was all about that wasn’t it? Humanity’s long held dream of immortality. A dream that may be realised much sooner than expected if the information was true.

"oh dear, what did she get into this time?" Jeannie's mommy was used to hearing this as Jeannie's curiosity and overactive imagination got her into all sorts of stuff.

Jeanne's daddy being a scientist was kinda interested in what the important discovery might be, well look for them he was good at figuring out the best way to get Jeannie to do something she was quite childlike so making a game out of things usually worked.

that and bribing her with treats, which Mr. Benjamin seemed to guess as that was keeping Jeannie entertained at the moment

INV ONLY Re: Encounter in the museum

Post by Fort/Sam on January 3rd 2018, 2:31 pm

Jeannie’s mother’s reaction did little to improve Matilda’s peace of mind. If their daughter had made it a habit to hear what she shouldn’t hear, keeping her quiet wouldn’t be as easy as expected. She couldn’t remember being such a handful when she was Jeannie’s age. Sure she hadn’t been a saint, as her parents had reminded her on many an occasion, but she couldn’t remember an occasion when she had been eavesdropping on important conversations. Her surprise birthday parties withstanding. She prayed her own children would never grow up to be like this.

It wasn’t until Jeannie’s father spoke, that Matilda lost all hope of keeping this under wraps. If her own parents suggested making up a far-fetched story like being secret agents to keep their daughter from talking, they really hit the bottom.

Adam might succeed, he was good at entertaining kids. With her being absent or otherwise prevented, he had to be. His stories were, according to their children, the best in the world. And they would know, he told them bedtime stories every evening. She never got past reading them from a book. And wasn’t even very good at it.

She looked at Benjamin for a second. He just shrugged from behind his desk, unsure on how to respond to this. It seemed it would fall to her after all to do something about this.

She sighted before she walked to Jeannie and sank on one knee so they could see eye-to-eye.

“Listen, Jeannie,” she started, “what you’ve heard us talk about in the corridor is very important. If word of this discovery gets out, a lot of people will start looking for it. Especially the wrong people, who’ll misuse whatever it is they find out there. You understand that, don’t you?”

She hesitated for a moment. This was more or less what her father had suggested: telling Jeannie that it was very important to keep the information to herself. She hadn’t woven a fancy story about it, but the essence was the same. For a moment she had even considered telling her the truth, which was so hard to believe already. But would it be enough? They were dealing with what seemed to be a child, even if she looked like a full-grown woman. Perhaps she ought to add an extra initiative, a reward for good behaviour. It had always worked with her own children.

“If you can keep this a secret until I’ve visited the place, Benjamin will give you an exclusive tour through the museum,” she continued. Behind her she could hear Benjamin complain, but she ignored it. “He’ll even let you touch some of the artefacts they keep around here.”

She wasn’t planning on letting Jeannie touch any real item, or course. A large part of the items they had on display were fakes anyway. Well crafted fakes, almost unable to distinguish from the real stuff. The real objects were kept in special vaults, away from the eyes of the visitors. Benjamin knew by heart which were real and which weren’t, so he could let Jeannie touch some of the imitations.

“What do you say about that?”

Matilda felt a bit ridiculous, sitting on one knee with her right pink intertwined with Jeannie’s. But if it would keep Jeannie quiet, she was willing to go to any lengths. The safety of the expedition was worth it.

“Pinky promise,” she stated, sealing the deal.

With this taken care off, Matilda stood up. Now she had to find a way to get these people out, politely if possible, so she could discuss the details with Benjamin in private. She wanted to leave as soon as possible. Today if she could still get her hands on a ticket, latest tomorrow.

Time was of the essence. Jeannie might keep her mouth, but Matilda wasn’t naïve enough to believe Benjamin was the only one who knew about the discovery. Others, far more shady characters, would have heard about it too and would make their own plans to get their hands on the secrets of El Unicornio. She’d have to beat them to it.

While the potential discovery excited her, she was also faced with mixed feelings about leaving. She had only returned from her unexpected trip to Siberia about two weeks ago. To have to leave Adam and the twin again so soon was not easy. Not that leaving them behind ever was, but usually she was stayed at home for at least a few months before setting out on a new adventure. Benjamin’s discovery came at a rather unfortunate time. But when had fate ever taken her wishes into account?

She could only pray they’d understand why she had to do this.

“Now, if you’ll excuse us, Benjamin and I have to plan an expedition,” she addressed Jeannie’s parents. “In private.” She emphasised this enough so they’d get the hint to leave without making a fuss.

When the door closed behind the visitors, Benjamin looked straight at Matilda. His piercing gaze told her he wasn’t all too happy about the way she handled things.

“Next time of you desperately want to keep someone quiet, who don’t you take her along with you?” he asked her. “It could prove to be educative too. She looked like she could use a bit of private schooling.”

“I’m sure she does,” Matilda commented. “Now, on to business. Where did you say the wreckage was found?”
