Either start a topic where your character is involved for others to jump into, or jump into someone elses. (If its an 'open' thread, available to anyone) That's the trend, usually. You can look at posts in United States to see how they usually start.

You don't have to catch up on reading anything, you can simply make a topic, and someone will reply sooner or later.
