The Legacy

Personality: He is stoic in most situations, except when there is a large amount of death. In those cases, extreme sadness is felt but shown as anger towards those responsible. He feels that it it his duty to protect the earth and it's "children", which means he feels guilt whenever he fails to prevent a death or assault when he could have stopped it. He values others over himself and would sacrifice himself if it meant other people would be saved. He is very serious and emotionless for the most part, and very to-the-point when he speaks. Because of this, he has few friends, though he enjoys the solidarity. His only fear is his failure to protect the world from Armageddon.

Weaknesses:
  • Overwhelming Force- The Guardian can be overcome by a vast use of power and force. In most cases, this means a mob of powerful foes attacking him at once.
  • His Good Nature- If you have someone hostage, he will surrender in exchange for the hostage's/hostages' freedom.
  • Revocation- If more than half of the people on earth stated that The Guardian's powers be revoked, he would lose his superhuman abilities.
  • Petrification- If he were to be encased in stone, he would remain inactive until the statue was broken.

History: Spirits and otherworldly things have always influenced man. Good spirits clashing with bad spirits, inspiring men to work for them and against their enemies. Spirits would promise power in exchange for allegiance, and men would summon different beings and spirits in order to gain power or accomplish tasks. Some powerful spirits became the deities of cultures, and some spirits adopted the names of a culture's deities. Long ago, such recognizable spirits began to quarrel. A spirit called Lucifer fought constantly with another called Pan. Lucifer was more powerful, but he was often magically bound, allowing Pan to be an ample match for Lucifer's strength. But Lucifer was cunning, and there was no limits in his eyes. All actions were fair game. This is what brought his attention, one day, to Pan's brother, a spirit called Thanatos. Thanatos' powers specialized in death, and as such he had a split personality. His "good" personality which went along with the good aspects of Death (rebirth, renewal, continuation of the circle of life) and his "bad" personality, which went along with the bad aspects of death (the reaping of souls, death of life). Lucifer plotted to exploit this dual personality in order to kill Pan. First Lucifer waited until a magically adept human summoned him. Lucifer offered so much power and wealth to the mortal, the man could not resist. He instructed the human to travel to a sacred hill to perform a ritual. Following Lucifer's instruction, the man began to perform the ritual. Using artifacts provided to him by Lucifer, and his own magical knowledge, the man was able to summon Thanatos and bring forth his "bad" personality. Sensing something was wrong, Pan appeared. Pan was horrified to find his brother turned evil by the ritual. Laughter filled the air as Lucifer gazed upon the seen. Lucifer began to attack after commanding Thanatos to kill Pan. In the end, Lucifer's plan was successful. Pan's energy was sapped, his consciousness shattered. In his last breath, Pan had uttered the words "One left, in my absence", releasing into the world a powerful soul. With no body, it lied dormant.

As Lucifer reveled in his victory, the mortal man was struck by the severity of what he had done. He had killed a powerful spirit that kept Lucifer in check, and he instantly regretted it. As Lucifer was about to turn on the mortal man and kill him, the man cast a spell that cleansed Thanatos and banished Lucifer from the man's vicinity. As bad luck began to befall him and other people in his village, the man begged for some way to undo what he had done, or to at least even the balance. And such a way did come to him. One night, as he lay awake, a female spirit called Hecate visited him. The man had been cursed by his village for bringing them bad luck and despair, and he would be dead by sunrise. Hecate sat at his bedside and offered a way for him to redeem his past actions. If the man would lie with her tonight, his last night of life, the child would make up for what he had done. Through magical methods, a soulless child was conceived as a result of that night. But Hecate had wanted just this. She bound the soul that Pan had released into the world into the body of the child by performing a rite and bathing the child in the Nile. Through this long snaked path that began with Lucifer's wish for the death of a spirit, The Guardian was born.

From his birth, The Guardian was taught that his sole purpose was to protect the earth and those that live on it. Evil was a reality of life, and he was there to help balance the scales. He was also told that should the people of the earth become unsatisfied with him as The Guardian, they could revoke his power and a new Guardian would be born. He spent many years fighting for good until 1096. He travelled to Jerusalem in order to try and negotiate peace and prevent further bloodshed. He could foretell that the war would be a deadly one if waged. When he tried to prevent the battle, he was met with attacks from vast amounts of soldiers and sorcerers. The Guardian died from the use of Overwhelming Force.

Five hundred years later, The Guardian awoke in Jerusalem. He was no longer dead and newly reformed. There was nothing to do but return to his duty of protecting the earth and her children. Travelling to Europe, he found much conflict and suffering which he had to deal with. But there was no event he could not handle and he did well in keeping wars in check and helping those he could. But in 1645, near the end of the 30 Years War, The Guardian was again defeated. A Transylvanian mystic wanted to help his country and its' allies win the war, so he conspired to remove The Guardian's interference in the ongoing conflict. By studying ancient arabic scrolls, he was able to find a way to disable The Guardian: Petrification. And petrify him he did. As The Guardian stood in the midst of the battlefield, attempting to blind both sides so they could not fight, the mystic chanted a mantra and covered The Guardian in sandy mixture of things. Moments later, The Guardian was but a statue.

Years late, in 2012, construction workers attempting to build a strip mall unearthed a finely detailed statue. After being studied for a year at an Austrian Museum, the statue was sent to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to be put on display. As the statue was being loaded off the truck, one of the movers accidentally banged the box on the floor of the truck. The one crack made by this event was enough to free The Guardian from his prison. Now unleashed upon a world much changed and more chaotic than the one he left, he will need to take up the challenge of protecting a world hellbent on destroying itself.
