Do you know why the caged bird sings?

The Looks

Samara has been cursed with part avian physiology and part human. Her face and her chest down to her inner thigh retain their human physiology whereas the rest of her body has taken on an avian form. Yellow feathers spread throughout the rest of her body, covering her breasts and her reproductive organs as well. Her hands have turned to claws and her feet into talons. A wing has grown from her scapula to her fore arms that stretch out to six feet when fully outstretched. Her tail and the rest of her lower body are covered in brown feathers up to her shoulders which are yellow. The feathers around where her head hair would be is black just like her natural colour.

The Legacy

Personality:

There are many things that Samara is not able to recall before her metagene activated, but her personality is not one of them. She recalls that she used to possess qualities of an extrovert. She remembers laughing, screaming, being loud. One would not be wrong to call her the life of the party, the initiator, the fun one.  The reminder of who she used to be has shaped Samara deeply in her current state. Samara is deeply ashamed of what she has become and has now become timid and fearful, afraid of the world's reaction to her.  Her inability to speak thus has further forced her to retreat into solitude, unable to communicate her feelings to anyone in the world.

History:

Samara's parents were Ethiopian migrants who moved to the States for work. Her father was an engineer employed by the United States government while her mother was a stay at home mom.
From a young age Samara showed that she was a naturally talented singer. She was constantly praised for her alluring voice and was came in first in a singing competition that granted her a full ride scholarship to an elite liberal arts academy.

In college Samara was known for being the one person that everyone knew. The reason that many relationships started and being an overall delight to be around.  And though many boys tried to court her, Samara would reject their advances in favor of improving on her art. Life for her was perfect.

One fateful day, she was returning home from a singing competition out of state. She and a group of close friends were driving through the night when they were suddenly caught up in a metahuman battle. Their car was picked up by someone with super strength and hurled at another super who knocked the car aside without batting an eye. The vehicle rolled several times before coming to a rest in a ditch, killing three of Samra’s friend and leaving another on death’s door.

In the chaos, Samara had triggered and her power compelled her to sing, healing the wounds of her only living friend before falling unconscious to her injuries.  When she next gained consciousness she was lying in a hospital bed with a black couple sitting by her bed. Though Samara felt that these two were somehow significant in her life she could not recall who they were. In fact she realized that she could not remember much about anything save for a few flashes.

Though she recovered quickly without much lasting physical marks, Samara knew that something was wrong deep down. Over the course of several months, Samra’s body began to change. At first they manifested in small things such as her voice sounding hoarse, her hair falling out more than usual. Eventually Samara could no longer hide the changes to her body. Her hands turned into claws and her feet into talons.  Feathers started growing in on her body and she lost her voice completely.

Her horrified parents locked her in her room, afraid of what she was becoming. Her mother believed that she was the devil incarnate and began to physically abuse her. To Samara however, she only noticed that two individuals who claimed to be her parents were now attacking her, using her physical appearance as a basis to mistreat her.  She internalized the mistreatment for many months until one day she used her power on her mother in a fit of anger and killed the woman who claimed to be her mother.

Fearful, Samara escaped into the world where she was met with looks of disgust and individuals who hunted her based on her appearance. Unable to ever settle for long, Samara is always on the move, afraid of those who sought to hurt her for her differences.

The Powers and Weaknesses

(All characters can be as powerful as they want, as long as they are balanced with proper weaknesses.)
Powers

Song of Healing: When Samara sings she can heal individuals of her choosing around her, accelerating their natural healing process. This power cannot heal beyond the extent that the body is able to naturally and can provide relief to those suffering from chronic diseases but cannot cure said diseases.

Song of Serenity: When Samara sings she can choose to boost the abilities of allied metahumans as far as her voice can travel. Namely she increases the range of other metahuman’s abilities and increase their control over their powers by half of their original range/control.

Lullaby: When Samara sings she can lull her targets to a state of unconsciousness. Targets within ten feet of Samara’s singing have a thirty second period before they succumb to sleep. Each ten feet increases the duration that an individual can resist her song by thirty seconds.

Resonate: Samara can hear the frequencies of noise around her and is able to change the frequency of her own voice to either match or cancel said frequency.

Flight: Due to her avian physiology, Samara is capable of flight.

Weakness(es)

Hear no Evil: Individuals that are either deaf or have somehow blocked out sounds will be immune to a majority of Samara’s power.

Interference: Samara’s voice power is rendered useless if an interfering frequency is played to match hers. And though Samara is able to change the frequency of her songs, her Healing, Serenity, and Lullaby songs are unable to be sung at any different frequency.

Lungs: Though Samara is a trained singer she is only able to sing for as long as she has air in her lungs. Once she runs out of breath she must breathe to once again sing, but as her power needs time to reach its point of most effectiveness, she will have to start over when she breathes.

Silence: If something prevents Samara from singing such as a throat obstruction or a gag, Samara will be unable to use her powers.

Speak no Evil: Samara’s power has rendered her unable to speak. She has never learned sign language so is thus unable to communicate with anyone save for telepaths.

Claws for Hands: Because of the avian physiology that her powers forced on her, Samara no longer has any thumbs and is thus unable to do things that would normally require a thumb to do.

I’ve heard it before: Samara’s is unaffected by her own songs, thus she is unable to heal or extend her own power’s range via singing.

RP Mechanics

RP Mechanic(s):

Avian physiology: Samara’s hands and feet have been turned into claws and talons. She is able to utilize these new physiological changes as natural weapons.

-Samara can no longer sing words but she has beautiful vocals.
-Is still undergoing mutations associated with her powers but at a slower rate. Over the course of a few years feathers will continue to grow on her body.
