So it took a little getting used to, but referring to fries as chips stood as the last straw for Elaine's cultural assimilation. For lack-or want of- better understanding, Elaine dumped the plate on the table, stood up, and threw her fork at the waiter asking her if everything was fine. Sadly, this encounter only made the list of "Odd things Elaine did in England" at number 4.

"You could try to take in the culture." Putting spectral paw after paw, the small corgi walked next to his companion as they journeyed through the streets of London. Selling the appeal of England didn't initially work, and informing her of the importance of the book fell on deaf ears, but when he reminded her corgwyn come from Wales, Elaine made time to skip across the pond.

"I'm stealing a book aren't I?" Onlookers gazed at the cowgirl walking through the streets carrying a duffel bag in hand. Under the careful consideration of the corgi, she left her guns in the bag.

"Is that a rhetorical question or are you asking what you're supposed to be doing?"

"After we save the world I'm going to see where golf was invented."

"So, we're just pushing away priorities and just vacation planning at this point."

"We're already in the country, so we should get the book, see what minorities weren't allowed on the first golf course and then see the ancestral land of the corgi while we're in England."

"Two of those things are in Scotland and Wales, so  technically not England."

"But they they give the Queen golf lessons and corgwyn so they're apart of the country right?"

"Kind of."

"How many countries are in this country?"

"Four."

"Get your shit together England."

Striding through the throngs of museum goers, Elaine ditched her cowgirl attire and pistols for a more subdued evening dress. Her heels clicked against the granite flooring of the small exhibit hall while the ruffle of her skirt hovered around the midsection of her thigh. While the crowd did not pack the house, the positioning of the patrons always found themselves placed right in areas of traffic Elaine needed to pass through. Cigarette smoke and the smell of early evening drinking sat on the breath of the paranormal enthusiasts who frequented the place to get a glimpse of the Mad Tome. The museum sat in a residential district inside of an old house once thought to house a coven of witches. It contained no grand halls or sprawling lecture halls; the small two story home kept a living area for the curator upstairs and four rooms of exhibits on the first floor.

Sometime ago, this small museum stood as an afterthought to anyone in the field of collected social sciences. All rumors of witchcraft stood as an ancient thought, but it always helped the current custodian sell the image. Most exhibits displayed counterfeit weird science and fake occult findings, making the man whose family owned the land a laughing stock for decades. All that was going to change. He assured himself of that everyday. But the day he found this black, leather tome did not happen everyday; it only happened on a destined day. It washed up from within the sewers, carried by a dog with a hint of derangement from his gaze. Alabaster Opal, as he called himself for the better part of thirty years, knew this book came to him as part of a greater plan.

The plan did not care for him as much as he cared for it.

Nestled in a display case, the tome sat in ominous silence. For the past three weeks since he found it, Opal experienced dark dreams always ending before a fatal finality. At the end of each dream, he always awoke standing in front of the display case, gazing at the tome. Nonetheless, he always told himself, this was for fame. He needed this, no matter the price.

"Well, I guess this is the book."

"Fascinating isn't it?" Stepping from the side of the room with the light of the floor lights beckoning off of his widow's peak, Alabaster Opal, dressed in a magician's tuxedo, walked next to Elaine.

"Not really. I don't have my pistols with me, so I'm probably just going to punch the glass to get it out. Why are you here?"

"I'm pretty sure he owns this place."

"He's dressed like a birthday magician; who would give this guy a loan to buy a house?"

"I own the book you are talking about stealing. And this house has been in my family for years."

"Well that doesn't counter my loan argument, but it does explain..."

"You should leave."

Approaching the house through the side lawn, a woman clad in purple with a black veil led three other women in an examination of the house. Two doors in and out. Windows barred to prevent break ins. A second floor with no fire escape. She bent down and conjured a darkness in the ground before her. Slowly it grew and sprouted tendrils under her control. "It's time to take what was stolen from us."

Is A Book Really Worth All This? It Doesn't Even Have Pictures In It! (Bethany) Empty Re: Is A Book Really Worth All This? It Doesn't Even Have Pictures In It! (Bethany)

Defeating Elaine in the course of unsubtle attempts at stealing the tome, A woman in a fur coat seemingly passed unhindered through the glass with no objection from reality. Not to be done in giving no importance to objections from reality, Elaine stepped forward to admire the work until she realized it wasn't working. "You're almost really good at what you're doing. Almost." While Elaine kept her focus on the tome, Bethany took consideration for a larger threat around them.

Curling like snakes of pure shadow and intent on ridding the room of any hindrances to the dark woman's approach sent the onlookers away. If only these people would leave in a more quiet manner, Elaine thought as she tapped her finger on the glass. "If I were a dumb key to this stupid thing, where would I be?" Crashing like two cars in a head on collision, a shadow drenched tendril shot back in recourse. "I could probably just jump into there and grab it."

"You don't see a problem with jumping into a tiny glass container-oh there's a fight happening right now- you can't even fit into"

"I see the problem, but I also see the solution."

"Well, I don't, and I'm smarter than you."

While Bathany fought diligently to keep the tendrils at bay, Elaine found her key in a metal guard rail. "I'm going to divide that glass." Shadows tore ornate suits of armor from the wall and shattered adjacent display glasses along the walls. Out of the corner of her eye, Elaine spotted a tendril edging towards her with all due haste. Focusing on the user and not the weapon, Elaine threw the rail at the witch, connecting with her chest and knocking her to the floor. All animosity the tendril directed towards Elaine redirected itself towards the ceiling, but it only found itself replaced by two shadowy arms darting towards her.

Taking a full step forward, Elaine stepped through her dimensional gate and came out over the downed witch. An empty gaze lined the darkness swelling in her eyes. Driving deep into a nothingness not of this world, but not of unseen origins to Elaine. The time for investigation came to an end as two shadowy appendages descended towards her. Elaine grabbed the rail and stepped back through her dimensional rift to take her place on top of the glass display case. "Bet you feel dumb." Elaine looked to her animal companion as the heavy bottom of the rail slammed against the display glass. Instead of the pleasant sound of glass breaking, Elaine felt the rail bounce back up and hit her in the chest.

"Now that you mention it, the idea of you jumping somewhere you can't fit sounds less dumb than what you are doing right now."

"I'm just spit balling." Two more strikes made a little more of a dent, but nothing like Elaine saw happening in her head.

"What do you plan on doing with the tome while a fight is still going on?"

"Not my fight. I'm a nonviolent something or other." Finally a crack broke through the plastic reinforced glass. "They really shouldn't put plastic in glass; it makes breaking it to steal stuff a lot harder." Owing most of her success to the diligent fighting of Bethany, Elaine decided it would be best to steal the tome and make her way back to the States to fight evil, but evil cared little for Elaine's plan. Before she could even get her hand in the display case, two shadowy tendrils shot to push her back. A brutal shot from the guard rail rebuked one of the arms while Elaine pushed forward to avoid the other grabbing hold of her ankle.

Leaving the case would forfeit her ill-gotten gain, but the gain would mean nothing if Elaine died in the process. Instead of thinking along those lines, Elaine instead decided to launch one more daring attempt. She dove to the ground and came out of her spin to throw the rail across the room, striking a witch in the throat, while the tendrils still pursued. She locked on to a new target and ran towards the encroaching shadow. Disappearing before the tendrils and reappearing with her feet standing in the display case, Elaine reached down to grab the book. "Now who has dumb ideas?"

"You should finish this before making those statements." Enough of Elaine's tricks wore on the witch. Anticipating trickery, the shadows turned in preparation for where they knew Elaine would go. Her hands hovered just above the cover of the leather bound tome when the dual tendrils wrapped her arms and legs together, lifting her off of the case and into the air. "Even I get tired of seeing you be proven wrong."

"Okay, we should definitely wait until this is a fair fight before decide who gets the book."

Is A Book Really Worth All This? It Doesn't Even Have Pictures In It! (Bethany) Empty Re: Is A Book Really Worth All This? It Doesn't Even Have Pictures In It! (Bethany)

Post by Bethany Strong June 1st 2014, 1:30 pm

It appeared as though the witches had grown wise to the limitations of Bethany’s protective barrier. Whilst she had continuously fended off the tendrils –evidently they opted for attacking her one at a time, repeatedly- there were now three approaching rapidly. They were akin to three animated vines, though as they moved through the air adjacently, two of them broke away; one swooped towards her from the right and the other from the left.

Her eyes darted between the triad of tentacles, attempting to decipher whether or not she could defend herself against them all in succession. Hastily deciding against it, Bethany took a final look between the witch and the granite flooring. Willing her body to obey, she felt herself quickly begin to descend; within a few seconds, she could hear the collateral damage being made to the exhibition room as the tentacles missed her.

Swiftly deeming offence far better than defence in this situation, Bethany began sprinting; unseen beneath the granite. As her feet moved, she slowly allowed her body to rise with each step; until finally, she launched herself into the air as if diving out of the sea.

Her hands collided with the shoulders of the witch that had intended to defeat her and they both tumbled to the floor. The woman struggled beneath her and eventually Bethany rolled off, delivering a well-executed kick to her jaw as she did so. The woman cried out in pain, slender fingers immediately pressed against the sore area.

As Bethany sat on her backside a few inches away, she propped herself up onto her elbows and watched as the tentacles hovered in mid-air. Without the guidance and leadership of a witch, they were merely unpredictable sources of darkness. They swayed and moved wildly, strangulating inanimate objects and toppling display cases.

It was then that Bethany watched as the girl in the purple dress took care of two witches. One received a guardrail to the chest and after another altercation, the second was struck in the throat. Bethany winced as she watched the display, visibly uncomfortable at the savagery of the other girl.

Though the last of the four women had witnessed the temporary defeat of her allies, she didn’t seem fazed by it at all. She hadn’t summoned any of her own tentacles but she appeared just as menacing as the other three.

”You cannot stop the inevitable, girl.” The woman took a few elegant steps towards the display case, her words muffled beneath her black veil. Bethany doubled checked to make sure that the witch beside her was out cold and discovering she was, Bethany got to her feet. She began running towards the witch, the molecules of her body beginning to harden. She felt the familiar sensation of becoming stronger and continued towards the witch without hesitation.

Many options surged through her mind as the distance between them closed; a kick, a punch, maybe just a simple tackle. Though as Bethany’s mind settled for a barrage of physical attacks, the women turned her head slightly.

Beneath the black material, Bethany saw the hint of a smirk and as the witch raised her arm, a tentacle materialized. It raced towards Bethany, snaking at an astonishing rate. Though before she could react, the tentacle had wrapped itself around her waist and was lifting her into the air. Bethany expected it to merely hold her, meant to incapacitate her so that its master could retrieve the tome; but instead, it continued to rise until Bethany was used as a tool to open a hole in the ceiling.

She hadn’t had time to phase through it so the impact of brick and cement was excruciating; if she hadn’t been solidified, there’s a chance she wouldn’t have survived the attack. As the collision weakened Bethany to the state of returning her molecules to normal, the tentacle curved into the shape of a hook; it leaned back slightly and threw Bethany.

Bethany cried out and grunted as she landed on the roof, her body rolling for a few seconds amongst the gravel. The air was cold and unkind against the scrapes on her knees and cheek. She rolled onto her side just in time to watch the tentacle sink back into the exhibition room.

Every fibre of Bethany’s being was demanding that she rise to her feet; warning that either the witch or the girl in the purple would retrieve the tome instead of she. Though even as her legs surmounted a sudden burst of energy that allowed her to rise, her balance was severely off. She wobbled slightly, her shaking fingertips rising to assess the damage to her face.

”You look like hell.” The sudden announcement of another voice startled Bethany, causing her to wince as her sharp movements taunted her injuries. She turned slightly, hair dishevelled and face filthy as she took in the sight of the young man before her.

He was standing confidently, legs slightly apart and hands in his pockets. The black trench coat he wore billowed in the light breeze; it matched the long sleeved t-shirt, trousers and motorcycle boots he wore. Though his appearance would have made some people uneasy, it was his eyes that shook Bethany to her very core. Even the darkness of the night couldn’t dim the sparkle of the lapis lazuli irises.

”Wade?” If Bethany hadn’t walked over to the hole in the roof, she would have backed away as far as possible. As her features morphed into that of disbelief, Wade’s shifted into delight. He had wanted this, to catch her off guard and disorientate her further. ”You were dead. You are dead.” Bethany paused for a second as her mind made another assumption. ”Luca isn’t—”

”Don’t worry, princess. Your little makeshift bomb may have offed my brother, but I’m very much alive.” Wade walked closer as he spoke, the snarl of triumph clearly present on his lips. ”So, what does a guy have to do to get an apology?” Wade was now only inches away from Bethany’s face; she shuddered as his breath tickled her nose.

Bethany looked into his eyes for a few seconds; only realising that there was nothing there but hate; hate and vengeance. She understood that, partly because she had killed his brother and many of his friends. Though instead of apologising and trying to earn some sort of forgiveness, her brows furrowed and she tucked her elbow into her side; a second later, Bethany raised the limb and connected it with Wade’s jaw.

He stumbled backwards, muttering obscenities as he went. He quickly corrected his stance and charged for Bethany, though she prepared herself and allowed her body to travel through his. She intended to turn to deliver another blow to but instead, he grabbed a hold of her hair and prevented her from moving.

”Still using the same old tricks?” Wade spat, following his taunt with a brief chuckle. He pulled her back towards him and sighed. ”I was going to give you another chance, bygones and all that. But I guess you just don’t feel the same way.” Bethany groaned as Wade pulled her towards the hole in the ceiling and gently pushed her towards it, laughing as he did so.

Bethany felt her stomach turning in knots as she fell through the air; her eyes widened as the granite floor hastily became bigger. Though as she prepared herself to phase through it, the witch caught sight of her and summoned another tentacle. It knocked the wind out of Bethany and she felt the object of darkness slither around her waist; it slowly carried her towards the tome but held her above it.

Bethany was vaguely aware of the girl in purple beside her and in a last ditch effort to ensure that one of them received the tome, she stretched out her arm. Her fingertips barely touched the girls heel and she phased them both; their bodies travelled through the tentacles and hit the granite floor painfully; she had intended for the other girl to fend the witch and Wade off, but instead, she was immobilised.

Then Bethany felt a wave of uncomfortable heat wash over her, and as she grunted, she felt her powers wane; she looked up. Wade had his hands stretched through the hole in the roof, a grin on his face. Somehow he was emanating a wave of nullifying energy that seemed to negate both Bethany’s and the girl’s abilities.

Bethany watched as the witch delicately stepped forward; she chuckled under her breath as she reached into the display case and retrieved the tome. She held it out in front of her, lifting her veil to fully appreciate its brilliance.

”Finally.” She breathed, hugging it to her chest swiftly. Within the same second, her summoned tentacle slithered down beside her and she stepped onto it. As it rose into the air, Wade gave Bethany a taunting wink.

”Better luck next time, princess.” Then as if neither he nor the witches had ever been here, they all disappeared. The witches that had been incapacitated earlier were engulfed in shadow and vanished.

It took several minutes for Wade’s lasting effect to release Bethany and she gasped for air. Sweat gripped her forehead and neck as the waves disappeared.

”About that fair fight.” She muttered as she slowly got to her feet.

Is A Book Really Worth All This? It Doesn't Even Have Pictures In It! (Bethany) Empty Re: Is A Book Really Worth All This? It Doesn't Even Have Pictures In It! (Bethany)

Post by Danger June 1st 2014, 4:29 pm

A little vertigo never hurt anyone, but a large hole in the ceiling would probably land someone in quite the predicament. A quick sigh of relief escaped Elaine's lungs before she remembered her ticket for escape just shot through that hole in the ceiling. "Hey!" More tendrils encased Elaine, making any chance for escape as unlikely as her new partner-through-bad-situation surviving such a grievous expulsion from the exhibit. "That was a could be friend you just brutally murdered."

A smooth control brought Elaine closer to the witch and her dark intentions. Her hand slid under Elaine's chin, holding her head still. "This will all be over soon. You, her, this whole world given over to chaos and noise."

Her eyes pierced Elaine's gaze. While still held tight in the grasp of the shadows, Elaine now felt her strength wane. Slowly her muscles stopped contracting blood; her heart began beating at a lower rate. It felt easy in all uncanny reasoning. No stress or fear, just a slow drifting away. A pale whiteness overtook her hands and shoulders, still visible underneath the thick coat of shadows holding Elaine tight.

Elaine could feel motion moving her back towards the tome with the witch in control of each step. Her eyes never left their stare. "The Sanguine is no more. Welcome to the Void-"

As her silk words made one more pass to wrap Elaine in darkness, a sudden appearance shook the witch's gaze from Elaine. Tentacles rose from darkness to grab Bethany in the air, diverting the witch's attention. The trance broke for long enough to give Elaine a fighting chance to recover her sapped strength. Her heart beat soured in intensity and she could feel her adrenal glands shooting back to full throttle. Elaine tucked her shoulder under the thick mire of shadows and lodged her hand free from the encasing. Her arm stretched out to grab the hand Bethany offered her.

Not a grasp of freedom, but the dark force of magic pulled Elaine away. A hand grabbed at her heel, but no good came, only the cold floor pressed against Elaine's face. Disregarding her opponents, the witch walked past her dispatched foes and grabbed her prize. "Finally."

The words hung with a sense of finality for the girls in the ultimate disposition, but instead of claiming their lives, the witch took her victory in parting. Bestowing one last ominous gift to Elaine, the witch lifted her veil to admire the tome. A deep twisting circle hung to the witch's forehead like an indented leech, sucking in the air around it in a violent cataclysm of purple energy.

Something about escaping death made Elaine feel better. "Who's that guy on the roof?" Even though her glimpse of him only lasted a moment, Wade left Elaine with some impact. "Because if he is on the table for partnering to get the tome, I think he's a step up from you. No offense." A good stretch made the freedom feel all the more invigorating and trouble free, but, the escape seemed short sided in the absence of the tome. "Kinda sucks we didn't get the tome and the witch who is going to use it to open a dimension to the Void and usher in some kind of dark god did, but I guess that's life. I threw some magic berries in the last gaping hole to the Void and it closed up, but who knows if magic works the same way twice."

Coming back into the sway of things, the stumpy legged spectral animal waddled back in front of Elaine. "Amethyst does. Use your phone and call her."

"Cell phones are even dumber magic than berries, plus international calling expensive."

"I think we can swing it this one time."

Picking off pieces of debris from shattered display cases, Elaine continued to speak around Bethany and to the dog. "I'm going to make her pay the bill this month anyways to teach her a lesson about something."

"That's a good way to instill wisdom for no reason."

"Exactly." Elaine turned her head back to Bethany, being the only other physical person in the room. "Oh, since the guy with boots is gone, I figure we should do that teamwork thing you suggested. I'm pretty sure things will go better next time. These witches are kinda hard to track down, but maybe the guy who made you look dumb will be easier to follow."

"If this girl doesn't murder you I'm nominating her for sainthood."

"You can't do that dogs don't have souls."

"I'm a spirit and a corgi."

"You just shattered my ideals on what is real."

"Isn't this your fourth time dealing with supernatural freaks and their evil god?"

"The little ghost dog is right. I'm pretty badass at this whole stopping witches thing, so we need to find your guy, then find the witch, then save the world from becoming one bug Marilyn Mansion concert."

"Sometimes I wish the witches would just end the world."

"I just need to grab my bag that has my guns, boots, and phone in it so I can call this girl I know who is an apothecary to find out how we beat stop this from happening. By the way, I'm Elaine."

Leaving the museum in such terrible condition made walking through the shattered concrete on a low pump much worse. "So, I've been investigating this witch for a while now, and so far they haven't destroyed the world, but they might this time, or they might go back in time and destroy the world in one of the times I stopped them. I don't really know how magic works, so I'm not sure if that is something they do." On their way out, Elaine would stop by the trashcan she decided would make a good hiding place for her bag only to discover the contents of it missing. No guns, no berries to stop the gaping Void. "My boots are gone!" Feeling an anger inside her, Elaine tossed her shoes at the side yard before trying to take a step without shoes on the jagged sidewalk. A sharp pain drove her back to admitting bad footwear still trumped no footwear in this situation. "You win this time uncomfortable shoe." Strapping the heel back around her ankle, Elaine turned back to Bethany. "You talk like you're from around here, so where do we go?"

Thoughts and recollections of previous years stole Bethany’s attention as she slowly got to her feet. Wade was alive. Wade. Luca’s brother who had defended her when Luca was in one of his moods. The same Wade that had taken her out and showed her New York City when she was supposed to be under lock down.

Bethany sighed. For some reason Wade was evil now, or at least had chosen villainy. She couldn’t remember him having a bad bone in his body, and he was usually picked on because of it; Luca’s weak little human brother. Evidently he wasn’t so human now. Even though he was forced to do terrible things, Bethany never thought that he enjoyed it; but still, he had taken part.

”I’ve met better humans than most meta’s.” She muttered to herself, though as she did, she realised the girl was speaking to her. ”His name is Wade. He’s probably a lot easier to track down, sure; but I doubt he’ll make it easy.”

Much of what the other girl said passed in a blur, but somehow Bethany’s mind managed to register it all. Apparently she had dealt with these witches before and her name was Elaine; though she was seemingly talking to thin air. Bethany thought it better not to ask.

With Wade still on her mind, Bethany followed Elaine silently towards the exit of the museum. When propositioned with the idea of teaming up for the sake of the tome, Bethany simply nodded. ”What would Wade want in return for helping to retrieve the witch’s tome?’ She thought to herself.

Elaine continued speaking and this time Bethany listened intently. If she was going to partner up with a stranger, she wanted as much information about them as possible.

”Well I can’t say that I’ve had many run-ins with witches before. But I do know a few things about Wade, or I did. I don’t know, but I agree, you should call your friend. I'll call a friend of mine and see if I can’t find out where Wade is staying. Though if he's anything like his brother, he'll find us before we find him.” There was a nod of agreement between the girls. So as Elaine walked over to a rubbish bin to retrieve her equipment, Bethany took a few steps in the opposite direction and pulled out her mobile.

Her fingers ran across the screen hastily, dialling a familiar number. Though as soon as she pressed the device next to her ear, it went to voice mail. Floyd had always been a reliable source for information and was privvy to the discreet goings on of London; she had met him when she was only a young girl.

Bethany’s body jumped as Elaine began shouting; something about her equipment missing and uncomfortable shoes. Bethany watched the display and stifled an amused smiled, it was all she could muster because the events that transpired a few moments ago had left her feeling foolish. ’Maybe Elaine is right. I am dumb. What are you supposed to do when you see somebody you tried to kill?’ It took a few minutes of quiet self-reflection for Bethany’s brain to give her a mental punch in the face. ’You take them out. You don’t stand around, apologising and hoping they’ll forgive you.’ Then with that realisation, Bethany took a deep breath and turned to Elaine.

”Yes. I used to live here. There’s somewhere that I used to go, when I wanted to lay low. If we’re lucky, it’ll give us somewhere to plan our next move. But I have to warn you, Wade might be there and—” Bethany stopped, realising what she was about to say, to a complete stranger. ”I tried to kill him, or rather, I tried to blow him up. So he’s going to be pretty pissed. If you don’t want to get into all of that, I suggest we go our separate ways.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany was happy that she had somebody at her side whilst in London again. What was supposed to be a simple in and out job had turned into something that was inevitably going to take days to fix. There was still the question of which one of them would take the tome away from this but for now, they were agreed that it wasn't going to be the witches. Bethany could agree to that at least, but she most certainly still wanted to get paid. 'Maybe I'll add a little extra to the price. I'm sure all of this hassle is worth that.' Bethany couldn't help but feel a little idiotic; using money as a distraction of the mind was a weak attempt. Wade was out there and nothing was going to let her forget that.

That was certainly true as Bethany stopped walking. She looked to her left and was filled with nothing but dread at the sight of the church. Evidently it had been abandoned recently because the closing sign look fairly new. The windows were boarded up and the doors had two very large padlocks around the handles.

This place had served as a safe haven of sorts for children like Bethany. Children that had nowhere to go and were forced to steal to survive; they were given a bed for the night and a warm meal. Before Luca had dragged Bethany to the  States, she had loved this place.

”We should be safe here until we figure out what to do.” Bethany says quietly as both girls walk up the stone steps. As far as she can tell, it doesn't look as though there is anybody inside; hopefully squatters or addicts hadn't claimed the place yet. ”Come on.” She says quietly, placing a soft hand on Elaine's shoulder. Bethany takes a deep breath and phases both she and Elaine through the door of the church.

The inside is covered in dust but not cobwebs, indicating that she was right, it hasn't been abandoned for long. She immediately walks down the aisle, taking some comfort in pleasant memories that occurred here. There's the bench that she sat at the first time she was here and skywards is the balcony in which she shared a secret kiss with Wade. Yes, there were a lot of pleasant memories but most were terrible.

”I'll be back in a moment.” Bethany doesn't turn back as she begins walking towards a smaller door within the church. She presses her palms against it and it opens with a loud creak. Hastily walking through it and searching for any signs that there were any vagrants here recently, she catches a glimpse of a shadow moving to her right.

Immediately allowing her molecules to solidify, Bethany takes a defensive stance. She waits patiently but with purpose, biding her time until the stranger decides to reveal themselves. She waits for minutes, until the point where she questions whether or not there is actually somebody there.

”I told you, Beth. Still pulling the same old tricks?” Every hair on Bethany's body stands up as Wade's voice emanates through the room. It chills her to the bone and she's torn between running and fighting. Though it appears as though Wade makes the decision for her as he slowly circles her, stopping between her and the door. ”Don't worry. I'm not really here, merely a projection courtesy of the witches. Fascinating women once you look past the bloodied sacrifices and--” He pauses, smirking for a second. ”Lets just say they have a very medieval way of doing things.”

Bethany refuses to play along with his game and merely sighs. ”What happened to you, Wade? You were  good, honest. Human. Was it the witches? Have they done something to you?” She takes a step forward but Wade's sudden jolt of laughter makes her wince.

”The witches did nothing to me. It was you, princess. Your little bomb awakened something within me that nobody could have suspected, not even you.” He paces slowly, chuckling between words. ”You stand there, the righteous girl that thinks herself too good to pick a side. You would rather choose the winning side and then abandon them when the tables are turned. Did you do that with me? Use me to gain some sort of protection against Luca? He wanted to kill you, did you know that? I stopped him, I stopped him because--”

”Please do not tell me that you're doing this as some sort of revenge because I didn't spare you. You were there, with Luca's men. You killed people, murdered them. I thought about sparing you, but you can't pick sides. You can't do terrible things and then claim you were really a hero. Sure, you regretted the things you did but even I, the one who likes to dabble between the two, refused. Luca was a psychopath.” She's interrupted when there's a thundering bang from the main part of the church.

”You're a hypocrite, princess. And for that, your little friend in there is going to die.” Bethany watches as the image of Wade begins to distort until it finally fades. Then without thinking, Bethany runs towards the door and phases through it.

”Elaine!”

Is A Book Really Worth All This? It Doesn't Even Have Pictures In It! (Bethany) Empty Re: Is A Book Really Worth All This? It Doesn't Even Have Pictures In It! (Bethany)

Going to a church solved a few problems they picked up, but didn't bring them much closer to fixing the problem at hand. The fact it would bring them dangerously closer to the man holding a grudge against half the people in the duo seemed dubious. "So, this Wade guy, you've met him before and he doesn't like you?" The neighborhood they stepped into fell into shambles from the town behind them. "If he's friends with these witches, then I guess that means you've made at least two consecutive good decision at some point in your life."

"We need to get a drop on this coven, but I've never actually gotten a drop on them before. Most of the time a bizarre situation unfolds before me and you know, shit happens." Elaine kept looking at the service on her phone. She could readily speak to spirits from another dimension, but calling Connecticut slithered just out of her fingers. "I just need to figure out how exactly we get that to fall into place in just the precise order." Something about the order always stuck with Elaine, chaos always needed to swirl in just the right amount. Once the right amount set in, everything worked out perfectly, almost like some degree of spectral conditioning for the fabric of time.

Then the fabric of space lessened to the tune of Amethyst answering her phone in a barely outside of a stupor. "Hello?"

"It's Elaine. Everything you said was wrong and dumb so now the witches have the tome and said something about a portal."

"Wait, I told you to go drop off a package; why are you in London?"

"I remember walking to the UPS store thinking about how dumb having to do this was, then I thought of how dumb magic and witches are..." While continuing her long distance conversation, Beth placed her hands upon Elaine's shoulders and the two girls shifted through space to arrive on the other side of the church wall. "Ame, are you there? I just passed through time and space, do I still have a signal?"

"I can hear you, even though there was an odd sound coming from your end for some..."

"Well, I'm in a church and you worship Satan so it's likely coming from your end, but right now I need to know how to beat these witches. We already found out losing powers and getting beaten up doesn't work, so we need to try..."

"The berries should work like last time."

"What about if they got stolen because England is terrible?" Beth walked away from Elaine towards the back of the church. Whatever she planned on uncovering in the darkness of a church stood between her and the higher powers of this place; Elaine just didn't think the divine conference would invoke so many people unfavorable to her cause.

"The berries just collapse the temporal bridge holding together the fabric of the Void. It's a tightly wound existence of pure structured energy. A prefect order, and if something can inflict a change in the flow of energy, the bridge collapses."

"How does magic work into that?"

"Magic is just what science can't explain..."

"Everyone hates you for saying it like that."

"Listen, the berries could register in the fabric lining of the opening. I don't know what all you can find that can do that, but..."

"Just throw stuff at it til it collapses?" Figuring her only chance for safety lied in getting whatever material she could in there, Elaine began to survey what individual materials she had at her disposal.

"I would steal the tome and hope it never comes to that, because I have no idea what each thing you threw in there would do."

"So magic got it. I'll tell Beth about magic." Plastic. Check. Wood. Check. Clock attached to wiring running through a container full of nails. Check.

"Who?"

"Beth!" Elaine called out to the backroom before the bomb made a clicking noise. Tossing the bomb out of her hand, Elaine stepped into the overlay of dimensions for a brief second. When she came out, she could see the path of destruction left by the bomb and feel the heat rise around her. Standing on the living side of a near death experience. "I figured out something so good someone tried to kill me." The church stood in disarray. Chaos even. It looked good for what she needed. A little essence of pure chaos. "I'm going to ask the little dog if he can help."

Coming from under the pews toppled over by the shattering blast, the small dog braved the wrath of the gods by going against some religious dogma a spirit dog giving advice to a cowgirl on the phone with an alchemist. "Why don't you ask Amethyst."

"I've already phased out of existence twice while on the phone with her; do you know expensive that is probably going to be?"

"Do you?"

"No, so it's magic, but I need magic that creates the essence of chaos to undo pure order."

"Well, that sounds ducky. Have you tried enlightenment?"

"The kind where I shoot it or the kind where it just blows up on its own."

"The enlightenment where those two things happen at the same time because of each other."

"Gotcha." Elaine picked up the bomb and turned to face Beth. "Call your friend and get us a place. I'm going to kill those witches with enlightenment and this bomb."
