WHAT ARE DRIDERS

Driders are like Centaurs if they were designed by Tim Burton.

Much like spiders in their anatomy, but massive and with the addition of a human-like torso where their mandibles typically would be. Much larger than most mortal races, the average Drider is over 15 feet tall and weighs nearly half a ton, though this varies between different Sects. Despite their spider-like bodies, they are in no way fragile, and are among the most durable races on the planet. Possessing of a keen intellect and a drive to rape, conquer, and impregnate, Driders are some of the most dangerous creatures in the world, sheerly for their brute strength, venom, and web.

Their lower halves are commonly based on normal spiders, though at a much more massive size. They possess all the proper anatomy of a spider, including spinnerets. The upper torso looks much like a human male, save for a few additions. Chitinous plates cover most of their torso and shoulders, with the extent it covers their arms varying between individuals. Each Drider possesses three sets of arms - six arms in total - and eight eyes, like their spider counterparts. Though eye orientation, shape, and design vary between species and even individuals, there is no noticeable loss of sight or depth of vision; the cause is most likely magical. Though the Drider mouth appears and functions at normal, they can at will rip open their face and jaw to reveal their hidden mandibles. Regardless of whatever form they take, Drider teeth are coated in venom.

Drider reproduce almost exclusively with an ovipositor, though they possess male genitalia as well. Reproduction with an ovipositor is pleasurable for the victim. Eggs produced by the ovipositor are exclusively male; they incubate within two weeks by anchoring themselves to the inner walls of the victim, a constant pheromonal neurotoxin produced to keep the victim in a stupor. These eggs have only a five percent chance to produce a Drider; most are Unborn. Out of the hundreds of eggs implanted at a time, only two or three will ever grow to be a drider. Driders born this way are born fully-grown but a fraction of their size; within the next two weeks, they will grow to full size through a series of near-constant moltings before joining their brethren in the Education Den.

Drider’s born through more traditional means of reproduction have much more viability rate; unlike those born from Ovipositor, who have no input from the mother and instead are produced asexually within the eggsacs of the male, Drider’s born through the melding of a Drider and a willing member of another race adopt traits of both. While the Drider DNA will almost always be the majority, these Driders can be born with the magic or physical aspects of these races; most notably, the coloration and design of their chitinous scales and upper torso’s can change drastically. Driders born this way have a much quicker gestation period than their mother rate, about three months if born from a human; the Drider is born a child and will grow to adulthood within five years.

WHERE DID THEY COME FROM?

Driders are a Fear creation, an inspiration of Yirah the Fearmonger one cold afternoon. Drawing upon the primordial fear, of death, rape, desecration, insects, things that go bump in the night, he created a being so heinous and so terrifying it left a blight on the land. The first Driders were monsters with little intelligence and less patience, spreading rage and destruction across the land like a wave. They were unstoppable, each Drider killing scores of humans and magical beings alike, using nothing but brute strength and natural advantage. They were an upended anthill, bringing the human world to the brink and feeding their progenitor.

Then Gwendolyn, the Mother, took pity on the humans. Though her magic was not strong enough to undo that of her brethren, she could alter them. So she gave the Drider a Queen and a King, gave them a purpose beyond just mindless slaughter. And the Drider worshipped her for it; Gwend the Queen-Giver, worshipped as the battle-wife of Yeer the Father. They hate that development. Queens directed the Drider; its not slavery so much as a hivemind. The Drider Hive exists to serve their Queen, and without one they are empty, like being blind.

WHAT CAN THEY DO?

All Driders share a fair amount of properties that put them at the top-tier of magical beings; venom, webs, stealth, and incredible physical prowess.

VENOM: Even the meanest Drider boasts a powerful venom produced by glands in their mouth and body. This venom not only coats their natural weapons - teeth and claws, though some Drider possess other, more potent weapons - but some Drider can actively draw it out, using it to coat others, or put in food or drink of enemies. These venoms can vary greatly and affect the body in different ways, even some in which venom doesn’t seem to come into play; this is due to the magical nature of all Drider venom. All Driders have an instinctual knowledge of what their web does. Older members of the species may be able to magically create doses of their venom simply by willing it.

WEBS: Driders are renown for their incredibly tough and resilient webs. Like the spiders they share a form with, Driders spin incredibly complex webs and designs for reason only they know; many claim to be guided by instinct, though it is certain that artisans exist among their people. Driders use this web to claim domain; anything within the purview of the web, even if they’re not directly touching it, can be sensed by the Drider, though the extent of detection varies between individuals. Driders, unlike spiders of any kind, can also form and weave web instinctually with magic, using their hands and other limbs. This is a huge boon in combat, particularly as this method allows them to mix their venom with their webs, creating potent weapons.

STEALTH: Despite their size, Driders are among the stealthiest beings in existence. Their density of matter and magic interfere with traditional radio and tv signals and they possess a mild camouflage, their patterns shifting as they will it. They are also incredibly quiet; even the heaviest Drider can move along any surface virtually silent, even horizontally and vertically. Even their magic is virtually undetectable, a unique feature of the Drider. They can move at full speed completely silently.

PHYSICAL ABILITY: Driders are incredibly physically impressive beings. Their muscles and bones are far denser than most mortal races, and their increased size, weight, and additional muscle mass, plus density of magic within them, give them another advantage. With just one arm, the average Drider can throw cars around, while a Drider using six arms can rip apart steel like butter. They are also incredibly fast, the average Drider outpacing cars at highway speeds. Additionally, the scales and chitinous material that covers their body is several times harder than steel and infused with magic, giving an absolutely incredible defense against most things.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES

Drider types, or Sects, are quite clear and defined, well-documented even outside the Clans. There are five quite distinct Sects, though only three commonly present themselves.

SERVANTS:The most common of the Drider race, they fill a servile role among Drider society. Most Servants are docile and submissive, unwilling or unmotivated to train and fight, though they will protect the hive if they must. Servants are responsible for hunting, for maintaining and repairing the Web, securing housing, growing what limited food they farm, taking care of clutches, bathing prisoners, and all the small stuff that goes on behind the scenes. Physically they’re the least imposing of the five sects, being just slightly larger than a human at 7 and a half feet tall; their upper torsos are less defined, while their lower bodies look more “regular” than other Sects.

WARRIORS: The second most common sect of the Drider race, the Warriors fulfill the role the name suggests. They guard the Nest, protect the Lords and Children, act as envoys for diplomatic missions, make up the bulk of Drider forces in wartime, and other martial tasks that soldiers are required for. Even for Driders, Warriors are aggressive, with an almost insatiable need to breed, kept in check only by the orders of the Lords and King, and the discipline that comes innate to the Warrior Sect. Warriors are the largest of the common three Drider sects, towering over their peers at an average of 15 pounds. Warriors are set apart by the rest of their Clan by the addition of natural weapons, such as blades, as well as sheer size.

LORDS:: The rarest of the most common sects of the Drider race, Lords fulfill a much-needed diplomat role to the Drider race, though Drider diplomacy isn’t the most peaceful in the world. Lords fulfill certain roles in society where needed, their intelligence trending far higher than their brethren. Lords make great teachers, storytellers, crafters, and artisans. Drider Lords have much higher mental faculties; they also possess an innate ability to do magic, tending towards unique or rare branches to better serve their clan. Drider Lords are of average size for their race, though their features are typically more ‘normal’, with more even eyes and less prominent, though no less effective, armor.

KINGS: Born only once every hundred years, Drider Kings are natural leaders; charismatic, handsome, and incredibly powerful. The sign of a King being is evident from the beginning; the egg is much bigger and heavier than normal, and they grow much slower. The Drider King remains in an adolescent state for about two decades, after which he molts into a form similar to a Drider Warrior, though physically and mentally superior. Any Drider around the King has a subconscious and instinctual desire to follow his orders, though its by no means a perfect command. After several centuries, a King undergoes another transformation. After several days in a cocoon, they emerge as a new being; a Drider Kingling. Kingling have a human form, with markings on their skin that represent their eyes. They are connected to the Mental Web, the ancestral memory that connects all Drider, and are reborn with a mastery of magic. Despite their more humanoid form, Driders Kinglings possess all the abilities of a typical Drider, but even more powerful.

Drider Kings can transition into their True Form at will, their skin ripping around them like a plastic bag. They can also transform back into the Kingling state equally as easy. Doing so is nearly instant and painless, as well. Drider Kings True Forms are far, far more powerful than their counterparts, easily counting as dozens of their fellow Driders in a battle.

QUEENS: The Gods of the Drider society are born only once ever ten-thousand years or so. Incredibly rare, but exceptionally powerful. Queens take over two hundred years to mature to their True Forms, spending most of this time in a form barely different from a spider. But once they emerge from this cocoon, they are vastly different. Spider Queens True Forms are hundreds of feet tall and weighs millions of pounds. They are can level mountains with their fists, spread webs over countries, and birth legions of True Driders.

Or so the rumors say.

The truth is, nobody knows the exact powers of a Queen. It is the most well-kept, and most likely the only, secret kept by the Drider. It is safe to say, however, that a Drider Queen is hundreds, if not thousands, of times more powerful than the King.

DRIDER SOCIETY

Driders as a species seek to be controlled; even without a living King or Queen, they are subservient to any higher power willing and capable or wresting their baser instincts from them. Though no authority will ever supersede that of the Royal Sect, Driders are susceptible to quote-unquote “powerful personalities”, the type of people who exude authority. Often, standing your ground against a charging Drider is enough to get them to halt their advance, unless spurred on by their royalty. They react to these strong personalities as if they were royalty in the absence of their own.

Driders are organized by the order of their birth; Servants are the lowest caste, Warriors reside in the middle, and Lord sit at the top, only beaten by any living Kings or Queens. Their role in the society represents this.
