INV ONLY Kings, Gods and thieves

Post by Cerek on September 21st 2017, 9:27 pm

Cairo must have been one of the most gorgeous cities Cebra had ever laid his eyes on, the night was lit up with festive looking lighting. The age old building designs really took one back to the days of Brittish colonialism. The night life was bustling but Cebra had no time or little interest in mingling with humans, he had a job to do. Doctor Alvarez had asked Cebra to meet a coleague and escort them to a supposed buried tomb. The Doctor wanted Cebra to see to this coleagues safety as tomb robbersand desert thieves were all about. Cebra headed towards the hotel where they were to meet and rest for the night. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes placing one between his lips. He lights it by focusing energy in the tip of his finger and making a spark, no one notices or cares.

When Cebra arrives at the hotel it's in a rather run down neighborhood, even Cebra who had never been to this city knew that. From behind shaggy curtains and dark windows Cebra can see people peeking out or openly watching the streets. He sits outside the hotel in a park area puffing away and sinks into deep thought. The deepening cloud of smoke surrounding his face gently caresses his skin like long slender fingers of a ghost. His thoughts drift to some of the acquaintances he made over the years. One particular one that stuck out was a young woman he had seen once at a bank hostage situation and once in an insane, deadly game show. When he finally awakens from his meditative state after his cigarette has finished he heads inside the hotel.

The hotel itself was magnificent adorned in gold and white, clearly not real gold or anything expensive. For this area of the city this place looked like no one local could afford it. Cebra entered and checked in on his reservation, he was shown upstairs to his room where his luggage was waiting. When the door is opened Cebra gets the surprize of his life seeing someone he certainly wasn't expecting.

"Y... you? How?"

Sitting cross-legged on her bed with per laptop resting on top Matilda Stark studied the data that had been the origin of their expedition one last time and shook her head. Not matter how much she went through the information, she never found anything that made all of this seem like anything but a wild goose chase. Most of the sources were of questionable origins to put it mildly. Had any of her students presented this to her, she would have send him right back with the explicit instructions to do a more thorough job if he wanted her to have a look at it.

And yet in spite of any real evidence, she had signed up for this expedition.  Though expedition was a grave overstatement. Because there had been no real proof, no university had been willing to fund the enterprise. As such doctor Smith had been forced to put his own savings on the line in order to fund this expedition. Which explained why there were so few of them, he just couldn’t afford more.

If this expedition turned out to be nothing, Smith would be bankrupt. On the other hand, if he did find the lost tomb his name would go down in history amongst names such as Jean-François Champollion and Howard Carter.  But based on the information they had, any success seemed out of hand.

She sighted as she put her laptop aside. It was late, but not too late. Smith might still be awake. She slipped of the bed. His room was just down the corridor, all the rooms of everyone involved were located on the same floor. She was going to meet him and tell him that, based on her own experience, this expedition had little chance of success and hopefully convince him to stop before he waisted all his money and this and destroyed his reputation.

Cebra sees Ika sitting on the floor legs crossed and in meditation, immediately Cebra becomes apprehensive. It wasn' t the most pleasant of meatings last time Cebra and Ika were together.

"What are you doing here?"

Cebra's face and tone expressing clear disdain for the young man. He stares him down waiting for a response though Ika says nothing and remains still with his eyes closed in meditation.

"Dont ignore me you little shit!"

Cebra's frustation building he approaches Ika and crouches down in front of him still looking him dead in the eyes. Cebra lets out a sigh and stands back up.

"Well I know you're not the colleague I was supposed to meet... So you were hired as well then. I mean unless you cultists just do charity work."

A moment later the door opens again. A woman steps in with deep blue eyes and ginger hair, a flatering physique to go along with it. Cebra's attention is instantly taken off of Ika as he turn to the woman raising a curious eyebrow.

"Well what do we have here? Excuse me miss, you wouldn't happen to be Doctor Alvarez colleague would you?"

Even with the door closed, Matilda could still hear the commotion coming from inside. Whoever was inside, he clearly didn’t have much love for the other. And these were the people she’d have to work with? Not the most promising start. But she was used to it by now. The had travelled all over the world and had been forced to work with all shorts of people. More than once the start of their cooperation had been a rough one. Only rarely it had stayed that way the entire time. Usually it got better along the way. Often, but not always, around the time they were being shot at. She hoped that last part wouldn’t be required this time.

Without knocking she opened the door and met two of her new co-workers for the first time. The first, a blond male mid-twenties, was sitting on the floor in deep meditation, seemingly oblivious to her entrance. His black-haired companion, for lack of a better word, with equally dark eyes, however, did notice her. But no trace of the doctor.

“I am,” she answered. “Stark. Matilda Stark’s the name.” She offered her hand. “Do you know where the doctor is? I was looking for him mister… Sorry, I didn’t catch your name.”

Cebra putting his proverbial best foot forward flashes his best charming smile and shakes her hand.

"Cebra Ulkenne, the pleasure is all mine miss Stark. I was told he would be here waiting though it's entirely possible he's out getting food. I did smell something quite delicious a while ago, maybe street vendors?."

At that moment Ika's eyes open up and he tilts his head up towards Cebra and Matilda. He jumps to his feet and stretches while yawning, curiously eyeing Matilda then turning to see Cebra. The sight of Cebra however makes the young man awkwardly back up.

"You? What are you possibly doing here? Dont tell me Alvarez asked you for assistance? You're the definition of violence."

"Wait... we're you sleeping? Also dont be a drama queen. I only blew up one maybe two cargo ships.

Ika's frustration was evident but changed somewhat when he turned back to the woman near Cebra. He walks over to her and bows deeply before her.

"Forgive me for not noticing you were there, this metal man and I are not friends. My name is Ika, I am of the order of binding light. It is good to meet you Miss?

This wasn’t how she had expected the expedition to start. The doctor not being there, and two of the members not liking each other. With good reason if Cebra’s casual comment about having blown up a pair of boats wasn’t just the typical male bragging.

What on earth had gotten into Alvarez to require someone like this for this expedition? Surely even without proper funding his reputation ought to have attracted a better sort of people. Definitely someone she should keep an eye on. Alvarez was already endangering his reputation by starting out without any real proof to support his theory. The last thing she wanted was some trigger-happy fellow making his life even harder.

She moved her attention to the second male present. He was as much an enigma as the first. He was young, she was certain of it. But there was soma air of maturity about him that made it difficult to put a real number on it; he could be anywhere between twenty and thirty.

“Matilda Stark,” she introduced herself for the second time.

When he made a deep bow she hadn’t expected to see in a place like this, she returned the gesture with on of her own. Her travels had made her come in contact with enough different cultures for her to know how she ought to show him the necessary respect.

What troubles her the most, however, wasn’t how he looked or how he behaved, but what he had said. The order of the binding light, it was a name she had encountered in many old manuscripts coming from different cultures. None of those sources had ever given a clear definition what this order was about, it had always been surrounded by a certain veil of mystery. To have its name dropped on a time and place like this, when Alvarez claimed to be on to something, couldn’t be a coincidence. It was more important than ever to speak to Alvarez now.

“The two of you can continue your amical chat if you want, but I’m going to look for Alvarez. There’s a few things I’d like to discuss with him,” she said before leaving the room.

If he’d gone out to eat something, like Cebra believed, perhaps the people over at the reception know something.

Cebra turned back to Ika after Matilda left the room, an apathetic expression painted on his face.

"So... not bad right?"

"Excuse me? What are you talking about?"

Cebra smirks seeing the naive nature in Ika. Cebra could be an odd person, he had an affinity for messing with people mentaly. He caught on quickly to Ika's more innocent nature when they last met.

"You serious? Kid you are just missing out on so much in life."

Ika expression is a confused frustration, he shrugs and grabs a piture of water from the table pooring a glass.

"Well no I dont think she's bad at all, she came off as a very genuine person Cebra."

Cebra stares at Ika stifling a laugh.

"Yeah ok kid, listen we should probably get looking for Alvarez as well. He really should have been here waiting for us. This isn't exactly the most safe area to be in, or so my travel information has told me."

INV ONLY Re: Kings, Gods and thieves

The front desk was staffed by a single employee who only reluctantly looked up from his work when Matilda cleared her throat. Even then it still took him a full minute to get up from his chair and move to where she was standing. If he was always this slow, it was a miracle guests made it to their room before they fell asleep right here. The thick, red carpet might even make that possible.

“I’m looking for one of your guests, a man called Alvarez,” she told the clerk. “I was told to meet him here, but I can’t find him. Do you know where he went?”

The man scratched his beard before he answered in broken English: “Have you checked his room, Miss?”

Matilda sighted. “Yes, I have. He’s not in the hotel. Do you know when he left, and where he went?”

The way the man stared at her, she might as well have spoken Chinese. For a moment she considered trying again in Arabic, but his disinterested stare told her a yet another language might be more successful. She reached in her pocket and pulled a green twenty dollars note out. The clerk’s eyes immediately lighted up when he noticed it; this was a language everyone spoke. She put it on the counter, shove it his way, and repeated the question.

“Do you know when Alvarez left the hotel and where he went?”

The clerk scratched the note away and nodded convincingly. “Yes, yes, yes,” he spoke. “The man was here about an hour ago. He gave me an address and asked how to get there. I ordered him a taxi to get there. I can show you.”

So doctor Alvarez had another appointment he hadn’t told her about. This expedition kept getting stranger and stranger and they hadn’t even left town yet.

“Please do so,” she told the clerk.

He moved back to his computer, much faster than before. He hit a few keys and with a deep sight his printer started to work. He ripped the paper off, not even waiting for the ink to dry, and handed it over.

“Thanks,” Matilda said as she accepted the paper. The clerk had been thorough, there was even a small town-map too.

“You want a taxi too?” the clerk wanted to know, eager to find another way to please her. And earn a bit more for himself.

“No, not yet,” she mumbled as she began studying the paper. “I’ll let you know if I do.”

INV ONLY Re: Kings, Gods and thieves

Cebra left the room with Ika following him. The both of them went downstairs to the clerk in the front. Cebra approached him and leaned in being as casual and space invading as ever.

"Hey friend, I dont suppose you could help me out? Looking for a man named Alvarez."

The man replied in Arabic though even through the language barrier Cebra understood body language. Clearly he was saying no and waving Cebra away, the first mistake being he could clearly understand Cebra.

"Hey hey hey dont give me your attitude, you know exactly what I'm saying you fraud. I'm just looking for a little direction come on now."

The clerks voice raised as he seemed to now be cursing Cebra out to the amused expression of Ika. Cebra however was wearing thin in terms of patience, he had dealt with difficult individuals like this before and there was always more than one way to skin a cat. Cebra considered simply grabbing the man and pulling him over the desk and shaking the answers out of him. Before Cebra could reach for him Ika put his hands on Cebra's shoulder.

"Let me handle this before you create an international incident yes?"

Cebra grumbled for a moment staring down the clerk then turned away in frustration.

"Pfft fine if you think you can do better be my guest."

Ika using the little Arabic he knows asks again if the clerk knows where Alvarez is. Though the clerk is a bit less dismissive he still says that he knows nothing. Ika looks down past the clerk noticing a small trace of some white powder. When he takes a closer look at the man he notices how many scars he has from picking his face. His eyes are also a little glazed over as well as him being a little twitchy. Ika speaks to him in a whispered tone, the man seems to have an instant change of heart even having a look of fear on his face.

After a short exchange Ika returns to Cebra who saw the whole thing, curious he cannot help but inquire.

"Ika what was all that about? He looked ready to piss himself scared."

"... Drug abuse is a terrible thing, especially in this country. We should get moving, we now have an address at least."

Leaving the hotel Ika and Cebra travel through narrow streets and alleys, the feeling of being watched is palpable even at this late hour. From out of seemingly nowhere a man rushes up to Cebra and Ika holding a hand gun, two other men come from behind to surround the two. Cebra and Ika stop dead and face the man in front hidden by a bandanna. At first he speaks to them both in Arabic using a harsh tone. When Cebra and Ika look at each other confused the man changes to English.

"You go back to America, this country and everything in it does not belong to you American. You go home now or in a box, I do not care."

"Who the hell are you?"

"You will take Alvarez with you or he dies, like you and your woman friend."

A grimace came across Ika's face thinking something might have happened to the doctor or the other cohort in the group.

"What have you done with Doctor Alvarez? You'll tell me or I'll make you eat that gun."

"Enough of this, I want answers now."

Cebra moves towards the man in front ignoring his hand gun. The man fires off three rounds at Cebra. Each round stops at Cebra's chest and bursts into a metallic mist. Cebra backhands the man onto the ground. Ika changes his stance to lightning foot and teleports behind the other two in a blink. He kicks the back of one mans leg so he falls then hit his head against a wall knocking him out. With incredible agility he hits a knife out of the other mans hand and side kicks him into the wall hard knocking him out.

Cebra picks the man up off the ground with the gun, brings him close to his face as Cebra makes his own eyes glow red.

"Answers now!"

INV ONLY Re: Kings, Gods and thieves

Post by Fort/Sam on January 28th 2018, 12:29 pm

Matilda had opted to walk to her next destination. In part because it gave her the time to think, but also because navigating a taxi though this maze of narrow streets and alleys was next to impossible. In order to get there, the driver would have to go the long way around. Nice if you came for sightseeing, but not when you actually needed to get somewhere.

She had just taken yet another turn to the night. By her estimations, she should be there soon. Provided she didn’t get lost again. Many of the smaller streets weren’t present on the map, and the map only mentioned the bigger street names. It might have been enough for people who actually lived here, but for anyone else finding your way with it required at least some luck.

Something made the hairs in her neck stand up when she entered the next street. It was shadier than the previous one. And not just because it was getting late in the evening. Where the other streets at least had a token of street lights, often just a single lamp, this part was almost completely covered in darkness.

Empty too. Which was strange. In every other street or allay she had crossed today, there had been people out on the streets. Neighbours chatting with each other, a small shop that was still open after closing hours or just people moving from one place to the next in spite of the late hour.

Suddenly a door opened and two men emerged. Matilda looked back and noticed a second door open a few houses back where two more men came out. None of them gave the impression it was an accident. Nor did they look like the traditional thugs you may find in a big city. This had to be about Alvarez.

Out of habit her hand slipped to her hip. Nothing. She had left her gun in the hotel room, believing she wouldn’t need it. A decision she now came to regret as the four men came in on her. Two of them were big, muscular types. The kind of guy you’d hire for dumb muscle. Physically imposing, but not much going on between the ears. They almost arrogant way of walking indicated they didn’t even consider her a real treat. She could use that to her advantage.

The other two men were much smaller, and kept both kept a hand in their pocket. Matilda didn’t need any kind of supernatural power to know they were hiding a weapon, either a gun or a knife, in there.

“Miss,” one of the smaller men spoke in surprisingly good English, “We most politely ask you to turn back.” He would indeed have made a polite impression if his hand wasn’t resting on a weapon inside his pocket.

“Oh, and to think I was always lead to believe you people were known for their hospitality,” Matilda calmly replied while trying to think of a way to get out of here. Four against one weren’t favourable odds. She’d have to find a way to split them up and take them down one at a time if she wanted to get out of this unharmed.

“We are very hospitable to guest, but we both know you came here with an agenda. Take Alvarez and those two men, and leave if you value your life.”

Matilda managed to suppress a curse. Did they have Alvarez? If so, she couldn’t just run away, she’d have to get them to talk. But which one was the most likely? This unpleasant specimen, or his companion behind her?

She turned her back to the wall for added protection if it came to a fight. These men seemed not inclined to prevent this. They must truly expect her to be some kind of scared woman, she reasoned. She saw no reason to let them believe otherwise if it gave her more time to come up with a plan on how to disable those two big fellows. If she could take them down, she was convinced she could get the others to talk.

“I don’t understand what you’re talking about,” she stuttered, hoping it would be enough to increase their false sense of safety enough for them to make a mistake.

The man shook his head. “That is very unfortunate for you, miss. Boys, teach her a lesson to refresh her memory.”

The smaller men kept their distance when their bulkier friends made their move. The first one raised a hand like a coal shovel with the intend to grab her by the arm. Instead she made a step aside, and swung her leg. A kick right in the back of his knee. He let out a painful cry.

In shock the two smaller men made a few steps backwards. They had not expected her to put up a fight. Clumsily they tried to get their weapons out of their pockets. The second bulky man was much quicker to recover from the shock. He turned his hand to fists, and attacked her. Quickly she made a step aside, allowing the man to hit the wall full-force. She heard something cracking. Either the wall, or his hand. A cry of agony followed. It must have been the later.

Without wasting another moment, she dashed forwards. Fast enough to reach both smaller men. One of them had managed to pull a gun from his pocket, but fortunately for her he was rather slow on the aiming part. She hit him against the chin with her fist and immediately made a go for his gun while he fell down. She sunk to her knees, grabbed the gun with both hands and turn around to face her last attacker who had managed to draw a gun of his own and kept it pointed at her.

“Mutual assured destruction,” Matilda pointed out when she got up her feet again.

The man sighted. “It seems I have misjudged your reputation, miss Stark,” he spoke. “To do so a second time would be foolish. If you put your weapon down, I shall take you to Alvarez.”

"Wait wait please I did not know."

"That guns would be useless? Yeah I bet you didn't. Which begs the question what idiot would send street thugs after beings like us?"

"Please dont hurt me, I can take you to Alvarez!"

"You're bloody right you will, this isn't a negotiation you little urchin."

Cebra pushes the man foreward a feet, behind him Ika handles the two other men by the back of their shirts. Ika and Cebra force the three men to walk in front of them to keep a close eye on them. A good thing though that these men showed up, Cebra had no idea where he was going. That fact had not yet occured to Ika as he was just following Cebra who was far too proud to admit it now. The men exited the alley looking both ways to an empty street as if looking for a way out of the situation. Cebra shoved the thugs forward again and cleared his throat loudly.

"Dont even think about it, you run and I'll remove your feet friend.

Ika looked at Cebra disturbed by his threats, not entirely sure if he was just threatening them to keep control or if he'd do it. Ika started to feel like he might have to be the one to hold Cebra back if he was provoked, something that proved difficult in the past. The men led Cebra and Ika to an old building, nothing like the rest of the architecture. The symbols that adorned the outside might have been hyrogliphs for all Cebra and Ika knew. The three thugs stopped outside and turned to Cebra with a stern sullen look.

"Your friend is inside, but perhaps you'd prefer to wait for the woman to arrive first?"

Cebra and Ika looked at each other.

"You wanna go in or wait? No telling what's inside. Could be a trap or something."

"If it's anything like this ambush we dont have anything to worry about."

Just then more footsteps could be heard against the stone street, another group was approaching them.

INV ONLY Re: Kings, Gods and thieves

“I shall lower mine first, as a sign of good faith,” the Man continued when he noticed Matilda was hesitant to comply. He did as he had told, he lowered his weapon and it disappeared in his pockets again.

Matilda theorized that since he knew her, and apparently her reputation, he must also know she wouldn’t shoot an unarmed man. This insight wasn’t enough to make her feel safe, but enough to end any open hospitalities. At least for the time being. She lowered her gun, and put it between her belt. With her jacket over it, the weapon was invisible to most while within reach at all times.

“Alvarez, where is he?” she demanded.

The Man did not answer immediately. Instead he gave same orders to his henchmen. Matilda couldn’t help but notice that like his English, he spoke Arabic without any local accent. Whoever he was, he certainly wasn’t a commoner.

The first of his henchmen got on his feet and grumbled something incomprehensible. Whatever it was, the Man wasn’t impressed by it. Even when this big guy, who was both larger and sturdier, give him a nasty glare, he did not flinch. Instead he calmly instructed his henchman to gather the rest and leave. While he seemed calm, there was something in his voice that indicated he would not tolerate any further disobedience.

The big guy seemed to have noticed it too. He helped his fellow thugs get up, gave Matilda one last evil glare, and left the street with the rest of his gang.

“My apologies for this interruption,” the Man spoke. He sounded genuine. But if he disapproved of these brutes, why had he allied himself with them in the first place?

“And what do I call you?” Matilda wanted to know. She hated the fact that he knew who she was, but she didn’t know anything about him.

“All in good time, miss Stark,” he replied. “This way, please. It is not far.”

He led her though a maze of streets and alleys that all seemed alike. Within a minute or two, Matilda was lost. She didn’t know where he was taking her, all she could say with certainty was that they were no longer moving in the direction of the map she still had. Was he deliberately leading her in the wrong direction, or had they already captured Alvarez and brought him somewhere else?

Along the way, Matilda attempted to strike up a conversation with him. Just to see if she could learn something from him. To no avail. Every question from her side was met with only silence. The only time he did speak, just after she had given up, was to tell her to be patient.

A few minutes later, they seemed to have reached their destination. Much to her surprise she found Cebra and Ika waiting for her there. They to seemed to have found a guide to take them here. The only difference was that their guides seemed far less unwilling than her own. If the Man felt anything about this, he did not show it. In fact, he didn’t seem to show the men, not just his own but Cebra and Ika too, any regard.

“Don’t forget to tip your guides,” Matilda joked when she made a step closer to Cebra and Ika. “And keep your eyes open,” she added under her breath.

The Man walked towards the massive, wooden door and gave it a series of knocks. Clearly some kind of code, but what was he telling the people inside? A simple ‘let me in’, or was he warning them he was bringing uninvited guests?

His sleeved slipped back a little, revealing a tattoo resembling a falcon on the inside of his wrist. Horus?

Matilda looked at the building in the hope it could tell her something more of this place. It was old, that was for sure. Thick walls and small windows to keep the heat outside. That was nothing out of the ordinary. The size of it was. It was bigger than any other building around it. Not that big that it would draw attention from miles away, but still big enough to be noticeable.

Another aspect that put it apart from the other buildings were the hieroglyphs carved in the stones around the door. Matilda recognized them as protective symbols, a means to keep evil spirits out. She had encountered these before, in Books of the Death, but never on a building. Did these people knew their meaning, or was it just a confidence? A blasphemous fancy of an architect perhaps? And that seated man with a sun disk on his head, the god Ra? First Horus, now Ra. How did he fit into all of this? Hopefully they’d get the answers inside.

The door slowly opened. A bald, elderly man dressed in black robes let them in. the sent of incense burning welcomed them as they entered the cool hall that was illuminated by torches hanging to the walls. A big contrast with the air-conditioned room back at the hotel.

It didn’t escape Matilda’s notice the elderly man made a deep bow in the presence of the Man. Whoever he was, he must be important around here.

“Take our guests to the main hall, I shall join them shortly,” the Man instructed the elderly man in perfect English.

Cebra smirked at Matilda's joke imagining tipping them over the side of a cliff as his sadistic humour influenced. Ika couldn't take his eyes off of the building, he felt the age in it and the presence of a man inside. The three men that were with Cebra join the ones that were with Matilda. The only difference being the one's that were with Cebra are rubbing their wounds and limping a bit.

"Hey kid"

"I told you to stop calling me that."

"Yeah yeah, anyways. Can you translate the hieroglyphs on the wall there?"

"Why would you think I was capable of doing such a thing?"

"Well you study this mystical stuff dont you? Being a monk and all. Also your order has had a relationship with the Medjay no?"

"What a foolish assumption. The order of binding light and ancient Egyptians may have had some dealings with spiritual leaders. But to consort with Medjay was a kin to consorting with the KGB. They had no interest in religious affairs."

"Huh... So you're useless here."

Cebra folds his arms looking back and forth from Matilda to the building. It occured to him now what everyone's role here was. Matilda was definetely the brains, which was pretty obvious in retrospect. Cebra was quite strong and capable but it's likely he was here because of his stealth and espionage capabilities. Ika proved in the past to be able to handle foes of a mystical and otherworldly nature. Now Cebra was convinced there was more to be concerned about than common dessert thieves and bandits. And normally when the risk is high the reward is something of equal magnitude. If this was truly another case of some powerful magic then Cebra knew he'd have a hard time.

An elderly man arrived at the entrance, the man was instructed to guide the group into some room further in. Cebra was hesitant to just trust these people, however they didn't exactly have any means of harming Cebra. Ika followed immediately as if he didn't even remember his earlier comment, the fact Matilda went in as well made Cebra think he might be a bit paranoid. At any rate he follows Ika and Matilda keeping a watchful eye on every corner and every wall for anything suspicious.

The group followed their guide though a narrow corridor that let the underground. Matilda couldn’t say if this unusual architecture was to keep people from easily getting in or out. And what was the purpose of having a main hall underground in the first place? Subterranean environments were generally not the most suitable places to invite guests. Not any she’d ever been to, anyway.

From the corner of her eye she looked at her companions. Ika had followed without questions. A sign of overconfidence from his side, or inexperience? From a member of the order of the binding light she’d have expected the first. If he really was one, that is. Apart from some odd behaviour, she hadn’t seen anything to support this claim. Nor anything that had proven her otherwise. For now, he remained an enigma.

Cebra had been less inclined to follow. Did he expect another ambush? These people had attacked them twice already. And they had Alvarez too, so he had every reason to distrust them.
Perhaps she’d been too quick to go along with them. But what alternative did they have? These people had Alvarez, for now they’d had to trust them and hope for the best.

The corridor ended at a wooden door. The same marking they’d seen at the entrance were carved in the wood. But why? What was the purpose of these symbols? What evil did they hope to repel with them? It was a question she couldn’t answer. Not yet, anyway.

Their guide opened the door, allowing them access to a larger room which had to be the main hall.
The main hall was as bare as the previous room. But where the later was eliminated by touches, this room bathed in light thanks to the fires burning in large bowls attached to the sealing. The scent of incense filled the room.

Unlike the room upstairs, the walls of this room were decorated by large paintings and hieroglyphs. Old, but well maintained. At least these people knew what they were doing. Their quantity, they filled every wall, and the fine state they were in, made an otherwise simple room feel special. Almost sacred.

Just a quick glance at the paintings was enough for Matilda to know they told a story of gods and pharaohs.  She would love to have a closer look at them, longer too. Undoubtedly they could teach her much about what was going on about here. Alas, she doubted she’d have the time to do so. As much as she loved being an archaeologist, Alvarez came first now.

Their guide pointed to a group of pillows lying in the circle, indicating that’s where they had to sit and wait. Before Matilda had the opportunity to ask him for more clarification, he had already left the room. The door closed behind him, though she didn’t hear a lock. At least they weren’t trapped.

“Anyone any suggestions?” she asked no one in particular.
